So went to go home and got into the car.. Screen is once again so dim that you can't even see it.. I just went with it this time and left things alone vs doing the reboot. The entire time the screen was dim to the point that it looked turned off.

For shits and giggles I did a CarPlay navigation to see if it would come up on the drivers display, nodda. My car is at 48% SoC, I forgot to plug it in last night, and so I plugged it in when I just got home. Figured maybe if the car was plugged in it might help with the OTA. 48% and it started charging the second I plugged it into my L2 charger. I have a 12a to 6a charge window, that MIGHT cut it a little close to get a 40% charge but I think it could do it. Looked at the FordPass app, according it it the car won't reach 90% until 6 AM!?!?!

So charging outside my set times, and saying its going to take 17hrs to add 40% to the battery....... On the upside I did get a message in FordPass saying a failed update of 1.7.1 happened at 08:35am, which happens to align to about the time I rebooted the SYNC system.

The dim screen is a symptom of an incomplete update. Once the update is fully complete, that will go away. It has to do with a mismatch of the software and the configuration file.

Ya I assumed as much since people have been reporting it for a while now. Just know if you reboot your SYNC to get the display back it will break the install, and it appears as though you have to start over...

So guess people that get this bug will just have to deal without their display till whenever the update fully kicks in.

Huh - interesting. Thanks for your many updates; this whole process is pretty interesting to watch

Interesting piece of info here when looking at my router. Seems like around the 7ish time frame my car connected to the wifi and pulled down 300MB.

One would assume, maybe even hope, that the car would pick times to do major updates based off usage history. Whelp, I can tell you it doesn't... I take my kids to school every day, I leave the house anywhere from 07:25 to 07:35. Yet it appears as though the car is like "Hey lets start a major update download during this 1hr 20min time frame that we know the owner will be using the car".

Granted, who knows when the car actually initiated the actual install of 1.7.1, this could just had been prep. But given the car is experiencing issues of 1.7.1 install AND I received a install error message at 08:35 this morning one could easily conclude the car started the update around the time the data was pulled down.

Ford, you are doing yourself NO favors what so ever, you are setting yourselves (and the consumer) up for failure.. Why start an install during the morning commute time!?!?! Then you wonder why so many people are having issues with the 1.7 install. I just can't...

Seems like best plan is to turn off automatic updates and just require a confirmation to start install or let us request the dang update!

Others have reported that the brightness knob fixes the brightness concern.

The knob is near the headlight controls by the driver's knee.

My experiences on updating may be relevant. When I signed into the My Ford website, I set up my account using a User's Name instead of my email. I found that I could not access Connected Services and the website stated I was not eligible for OTA updates. My complaints to Ford, on the 800 number, received a rather cryptic response that I needed to change my sign-in to my e-mail used by the dealer when they submitted my order. They did not say which account (the website one, the FordPass one or something else) or how to do it. Eventually, this last weekend, it soaked into my old mind that they were referring to the My Ford website. I found that after signing into to my My Ford account that the My Account menu changes from Sign-In to "owner's name" Account. Selecting it lead to another page, Account Dashboard. It has a button for Account Settings. It allows updating your personal information including changing your Sign In Credentials. I changed my Username from the user name to my email. The change immediately corrected my problems. I was allowed Connected Services access and the No OTA button disappeared.
In addition, my Mach-E was having connectivity problems. The AT&T service in my home is less than 2 bars. My wi-fi was not strong enough to reach into the attached garage. I invested in a Wi-Fi Extender. Installed it in the room wall shared with the garage. I was able to connect the Mach-E to one of the Extender's WI-Fi channels. The next evening, after making the My Ford change, I noticed the Mach-E just stated that the software version was up to date. Last night I recharged my car. After completing charging, I checked the version number again. It announced that I was updated to version 1.7.1. Later, it updated again and added Notes.
Ford needs to change the My Ford account set up page to remove the option of using a user name for the owner's sign-in. It would have avoided my problems. Also, they need to teach IT that not all of us are techies. We need more detailed instructions on how to correct problems that we may have.
Hopefully, these comments may help some of you.

So last night coming home, my Ford Sync version went back to showing the old version prior to 1.7.1. This morning it went back to -- Auto update cannot be toggled on, and the update notification option is gone. This kind of bugged update is precisely what I worry about, even back when I had a Tesla, that it's within the realm of possibility an update bricks the car. Kind of miss the good old days of buying finished products that don't require periodic updates. Yes I know such is the nature of the beast now that are cars.

First time I'm pinging @Ford Motor Company - is there anything we can do on this 1.7.1 update being stuck in a limbo?

My car is saying that it's up to date with 1.7.1, but no notes app, no frunk button. Is it safe to say it's still updating or hasn't actually updated? My auto-update button is now disable and cannot be toggled back on.

So still ongoing, my car is with the dealership again, they did more troubleshooting and then actually performed the update on another customer car which confirmed they weren't doing something wrong. After that ford approved an apim module replacement so that's on order and they are hoping to have it and replace it later this week. I'll update as more happens.

On a positive note though they gave me a new 2 door bronco as a loaner which while I like my mach-e more is scratching an itch my wife and I had for possibly getting a bronco in the future.... Now I need a rivian r1t loaner....
Just a note- the dealership called me this morning and they told me that after trying again to download files from the Ford engineers, the engineers at Ford decided to replace the car’s apim module with a new apim module that’s fully updated and functional. The dealership was not sure when they will get the apim. Hopefully soon and hopefully it solves the car’s problems! The car has been at the dealership for over two weeks. Like Cherlin, I’ll update everyone after the apim has been replaced. By the way, our dealership provided a rental which turned out to be a stripped down Sonic sedan.

Join the club! I don't think it's still updating but I could be wrong. Mine stayed like you are describing and then sent the message that the update failed. I have the Ford Early Access Team (Charity) working on it and I'm trying to be patient but it's hard to do that when there seems to be no progress on finding a solution.

Sounds like their solution is putting in a new APIM according to one person in this thread. Man, hope that's not the solution for those who didn't go to the dealer.

We still don't know that its a solution. That's just what they are trying next. At this point, taking your car to a dealer over OTA's not coming in or stuck, just results in weeks without a car while they diagnose.

I still have a feeling that when there is an OTA in process, something in the car locks the module from accepting other update operations. Which is why they are saying they can't update it using FDRS. Swapping the APIM could fix it, but its also possible that the GWM is what is locking it out because that is where the OTA is stored and installed from.
