So there’s two noises on this car.

One of them is just an idle noise, it’s quite annoying. When you idle or are going low speeds there’s an external pedestrian noise (not the noise from backing up in reverse although that is annoying when I’m reversing into my garage at midnight possibly annoying the neighbors).

I don’t see any reason for this noise to exist. The weird thing too is, if I turn off the headlights, it goes away. Can anyone try that out and play with it?

The reason for this noise to exist is that it’s required by law. Pedestrians (especially those that have impaired vision) need to hear you coming.

But I thought it was just needed for backing up. Why is it making the noise when idling even on auto hold? Even Tesla’s don’t make that noise, they just have the reverse backup noise.

It‘s required below 19mph. The direction of travel doesn’t matter. Tesla’s will do this soon too. It’s federal law.

NHTSA requires the car to emit warning sounds when travelling at speeds less than 18.6 mph (30 km/h).

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_vehicle_warning_sounds

Tesla built before Sept 2019 may not have the warning sound. Other manufacturers fitted their hybrid/electric cars with warning sound emitting devices many years before the deadline. But Tesla appeared to deliberately waited until the deadline.

I personally don't care about the sound. I never drive with windows open. I care a lot more about the electrical whine from Mach E's instrument cluster display.

Why is it making the noise when idling even on auto hold?
That may not be required by law. But the law also didn't forbid it. You can try to petition Ford to remove it if you care.

I'd stay tuned. As more folks get these and people start figuring out different mods, I'm sure someone will find the speaker for this sound and whether or not it will throw errors when it's disabled

Ironically enough, Tesla owners are trying to get Tesla to offer this as an upgrade (adding it) for cars built before Sept '19 because of their custom sound file mod they added in a recent software update
