Has anyone made this drive yet? I have a standard range on order but am thinking I should go with the extended range as my son is likely to attend NAU in two years. Wondering how the mileage was impacted by the mountains on the drive.

From my house in Glendale, ABRP says I can make it to NAU with 10% SOC remaining if I start at 100%. You could always stop in Anthem for a top up if you feel like that's cutting it too close.

Most likely. It depends on where in Scottsdale she's starting from. I didn't check Plug Share or any other app to see if there are options for a stop farther north. Camp Verde maybe??

Plug Share shows 1 in Camp Verde, but it is currently under renovation.
There are a lot of unknowns. How frequently will the trip be made overall? How many trips in the winter?
If it's not an every weekend thing, rent a car for the trip. The $5k saved on the SR battery pays for a lot of rental cars.

That's a good point. We have a Ford F-150 that we could always take, if needed. My son wouldn't start school there for two years and then would be there for four years so I'm afraid of the battery capacity diminishing over time which would then impact it even more.

It would be great if they add some in the rest areas along the 17!

You are more likely to see EA install new chargers along the route than to see that much battery degradation. Remember that Ford has provided a very good warranty on the batteries.

This is a good read about battery degradation:

If you can afford it, get the bigger battery. Peace of mind is worth it. Certainly over time more EA chargers will go in, but don't you want to travel with the car now?
