Phone favorites

I have no way to add favorites to the empty list on the phone screen? Can anyone tell me how to add a favorite? I am using Android 10. The MME has a 5-point star at the left side of the top toolbar. My list is empty, even though my phone lists favorites. Using Android Auto, my favorites are there. I am not always plugging my phone in.

Do you have issues with wireless AA? I'm on Android 9 on my Note 8 and it works great.

Android Auto works pretty good for me. I have attached two different Android 10 phones with AA with no problems.
