Alternative view: if Chinese government is subsidizing a certain product, say EV manufacturing in this case, why would you restrict the flow of Chinese tax payers money coming to US consumers (in the form of an EV in this case) rather than welcoming them open hands? If the economy would be open to competition, as it should, the American consumer would win. Now we lose and Canadian/European consumers win.
That's not the problem. It's when they having tariffs (and other such import barriers) on our products that we're trying to sell to their consumers.

Each time that your government add a new tarrif on products or raw material mean that you will have to pay more to get it! The billions that your government is referring come from your pocket!

It’s a very narrow minded view which misses the big picture. If you allow state funded companies to sell in US freely, that would render all local automakers uncompetitive and bankrupt. Overtime, the Chinese cars will be the only one in game. Then they can charge whatever they want since they control the technology.
Sounds familiar...? Yes, this was how the Europeans conquered the world. Destroyed their target country’s local products by hook or crook and sold their own as premium products. The Chinese learned the game well and are trying it now on the world. They already control the world’s rare minerals.

Of course you can buy an alternative product from another supplier with less or no tariff. There has to be some consequences to unfair trade practices.

Take the example of the aluminium, by fixing Ă  tariff on the raw material the China can sell it to Mexico to transform in semi or full product to ship in USA free of taxes. This have been advised by the Canada during the last free trade negotiation without success!

Of course. But without putting pressure on China to relax their unfair trade practices (like tariffs on our products), it's not free trade either. The point of imposing these tariffs is to get them to back down on theirs, because allowing them to screw our companies isn't right either.

The goal is actual free trade (no unfair practices from either side).

Actually the latest word from one of the Ford insiders is that the Mach-e batteries that were originally expected to come from the LG Chem Poland plant are now coming from a S Korea LG Chem plant.

Not that that has anything to do with the reason we're fighting a trade war to try and force China and others to play fair on trade.

I ignored it because it's irrelevant deflection to the point of why impose tariffs in response to China's unfair trade practices in an attempt to get them to play more fairly.

If Ford decides to build their batteries and cars in USA (like Tesla does) we won’t even have this conversation. They chose to go the cheaper way, outsourcing everything, so now they got to face the taxes. Are you happy that the other countries are getting the work done (and getting the benefits, when it could have been easily an American family getting the benefits). Of course why should I care about American workers, right?
