Hello everyone, I got a quick question.

Winter is coming and I want to warm up my car every day after work. My question is, can I use the preconditioning program to warm my car while being unplugged to any charger (don’t have any at my work).

Yup, just make sure you have the option turned on to do it while unplugged. You will get an alert on your phone saying something like “SRS Triggered Due To Vehicle Unplugged”. Which sounds bad, but it just means the car started and is not plugged in

For some reason when I'm not plugged in it will do my departure time at 4am vs the 07:30 that its supposed to do. When its plugged in, it does it right on time. /shrug

Thanks you for the answer, but that option is in fordpass app, I can’t find it directly in the car or I am missing something.

Another question: can you precondition on demand without setting a schedule? Is it just remote starting your car?

My car runs longer when preconditioning than with a remote start. It also keeps running for at least a few minutes past the departure time. I've never tested how long it will go.

Right, but say you're in a restaurant and want to get your cabin cooled before you go in. What do you do?

Thus far I've remote started in that type of situation. I haven't tested how much advanced notice the car needs to start preconditioning. It may tell you it can't achieve the desired cabin temp in the time allotted. Or it may give it the old college try. ??

Yes and yes. The biggest difference is that a scheduled departure also preconditions the battery (and starts much earlier). Remote start only preconditions the cabin.

Unless departure from work is a locked in time everyday, it would seem that remote starting as you're leaving your desk would be better.

I am pretty sure remote start will also cool the battery. That seems to be the case with my car?

How can you tell? Somewhere on here there was documentation from Ford that says remote start won't precondition the battery. The supposition is that the thermal mass of the battery would take way longer to heat or cool than the 15 minutes of time you get with remote start.

Hard to tell because my scanner doesn't connect during remote start. The compressor speed is way too high for only cabin cooling though. Next time I have the lower cover off then I will check the chiller to see if it is active. That should be a good clue. ??

I wish we had an option to precondition on demand. I much much rather have the car power on with no blazing bright display, side running lights, and day light running lights calling attention to my unattended car.

IMO the car should not turn on all the accessories with remote start till your fob or phone are in range. Then by all means power everything on.

Isn’t that how it already works?
