Hello,

I need an extension cord, found this one on Homedepot.com , which says UL listed, reading one of the reviews, the person said it is using 10 gauge wire, which is true, they claim 50amps, but 10 gauge really handles 30amps max, any other cable that you guys recommend ? or if anyone used this, is it good?
I used the Ford standard charger which is rated at 32amps.

Thanks in advance.

If you are trying to extend the reach of your EVSE, it’s likely better to use a J1772 extension, since the 14-50 extension cords all basically use under-sized wire. 😱🐩

I am trying to extend the reach yes.

There are a number of J1772 extension cords, rated at 40A or 48A. Search eBay, Amazon, etc. If you’re using the Ford Mobile Charger, a 40A unit will do until your FMC dies. The FMC generally cannot handle daily use, especially in warm environments. You may want to get an extension rated for 48A in case you upgrade your EVSE some day. 🤷‍♂️🐩

This ^^^^^

If you end up carrying the J1772 extension in the car, you’ll have flexibility at L2 destinations where maybe the EV parking space is ICEd or you otherwise can’t reach the intended charge location.

Check out this Camco 50 amp extension cord. It's designed for RV use. I have one similar and have used it with no issues and running 3 AC units at the same time. Main concern with extension cords is the voltage drop due to distance and the resulting increase in amperage. Poor quality plugs can overheat and burn up.

Thanks, I saved this one, I ended up making room in the garage, so back to park it inside and charge.

A 14-50 extension cord with continuous load of EV charging is asking for a fire. I wouldn’t do it unless you significantly reduce the charge rate, e.g. 20 amps, and buy a very high quality cord.

I frequently charge at campgrounds (which have all kinds of 14-50 plugs around) and still use a J1772 extension cord.

Here is some cord porn for you:
Ford Mustang Mach-E Recommendation for a good NEMA 14-50 extension cord 2021-10-09 19.16.16

(They re-did our curbs and, hence, I couldn't get into the driveway.)

I've had this 40ft cord for years now (at least through 3 cars: Bolt, C-Max, and, now, Mach-E). It has worked great (although I don't put more than about 30 amps through it). It isn't even available on Amazon anymore (there are other versions of it available now).

It rides in the trunk along with a 2nd EVSE below the false floor.

I believe the plug terminals are the main concern…poor connection between the plug stabs and receptacles (on both ends) can cause high contact resistance, localized overheating, and melting of the plug/receptacle. The onboard charger controls current (and it doesn’t know what is upstream) so amperage isn’t going to increase, but the wire losses (and heat generated) will.

Yep, and there are also instances of incorrectly terminated conductors, causing increased impedance. This even happens occasionally to the EVSE suppliers. There have been a few posts on the forum indicating that the 14-50P on an individual EVSE was overheating, so it’s not just the inexpensive cords that can be suspect. 😱🐩

Happen to have a product id/sku for this thing? I'd love to find a 20ft. I'm stuck between trying to run 50ft of 40amp+ 6awg to an EVSE or one of these J1772 extensions. I have a Clipper Creek 32amp EVSE I could toss in my laundry room on a plug and use the extension.

If I could knock the Ford charger down to 24amp I'd be even happier. I don't need super speed up north as I don't drive all that much up there. It's literally going to be 3 weeks I live up there this summer. Just dont want to pay DCFC prices for 50KW a week.

Nope, its been discontinued (I purchased it years ago)--got my Focus Electric 10 years ago now. There are newer similar ones available on Amazon (just search for J1772 extension cord).
