Tesla’s phantom braking has been an issue for years now. It boggles my mind how many long-time owners have just come to accept it and shrug it off as totally normal.

Riding along in my FIL’s TM3 with FSD on the freeway and his car inexplicably jams the brakes and tries to throw us out the windshield. “Yeah, it does that sometimes.” 🤷‍♂️

I've read before that Autopilot requires use of auto-high beams at night, is that true?

Interesting thread. My buddy is a Tesla die hard (he is the reason I bought the MME, because I hate Tesla) and he lives by Autopilot. He drives from Portland to Seattle a lot and only uses Autopilot. He's never mentioned the fantom breaking. He has a MX, wonder if it's a 3/Y issue. I will ask him.

Too bad I don't want to park the MME at the airport every time we travel, which is a lot since he's an airline employee, so we end up taking the M3. It's the worst part of the trip for me. ☹
Since you are the wife… Tell him no Brand T Autopilot when you’re in the car. As they say, “Happy wife, happy life!” 🤪🐩

Tesla Autopilot is terrible. Hated it. Would disengage randomly and on incorrectly mapped highways (new I-4 express) it would phantom brake constantly.

Let's be honest the Y and Mach-E are not quiet EVs though. You need to drive a BMW i4 or Ioniq 5 back to back and you instantly notice the noise difference.
Totally agree on the noise. While better IMO than the Tesla, my MME has way more wind noise coming from both A pillars than it should. The passenger left window also makes more noise than I think it should. Sometimes I hit the 'window up' buttons, and notice the window does go up and seal a bit better. Seems like the windows slip down a fraction over time. Maybe it's b/c my Fusion Energi was just so quiet, I got spoiled.

Bluecruise works well, but for me, it also has scary moments where it has disengaged without beeping or notice during a slight curve in the road. Luckily I don't trust any of it, so I'm always paying attention, which in some cases is more tiring than just having full control. On the freeway, the full hands free has worked pretty darn well, including the lane changing which is cool.

Audio system is just 'ok', especially for it being B&O. At times with bass, a front speaker somewhere on the dash or door vibrates the plastic or whatever it's housed in, and sounds like a cheap, entry level car. Also, not a big deal, but if I use the infotainment system while using android auto to listed to music, it will always make my music stutter and give a loud buzz sound for a second or two. Minor annoyance.

I could have sworn when I first got the MME, that when I started pulling into a parking spot, the camera would immediately come on and show me what's in front, as well as the 360 view. I don't know if it's b/c I have wireless android hooked up to it, but the cameras only come on if I get really close to something in front of me, and actually it's too late. I learned that the hard way and barely scraped over the curb before the cameras came on.

Curious if anyone has had the front collision emergency braking come on? I've gotten really close to a vehicle on accident once, and it did nothing. No beeping, no braking. I have it all enabled. Even my daughter's cheap 2023 Kia Soul beeps and brakes in those situations.

Overall, super happy with it, although wish I could have found one with the nite pony package. I hate machined faced wheels. All black looks so much better.

I saw something interesting last night in my rear view.
Zipping down the freeway at 9 at night. It's dark I'm BC HF in the HOV ok. Behind me a MY3, prob Ap'ing. up ahead a construction truck with it's big blinking yellow diamonds cruising about 25 mph off the HOV but half in the HOV as well. I kick out of BC and hop in the next lane (the fast lane) I watch my rear view because I'm expecting the MY3 to blast the truck with the driver of the MY3 asleep or something.

BUT. Instead
The MY3 blinks the hazards once. And starts to slow down. Blinks them a second time and slows more. Then the right blinker and moves over.

Do Tesla's auto blink the hazard lights if threatened? If so, does the phantom braking kick them on?

I saw this the other day and almost posted it to the Tesla Price Cut thread. His comments on Tesla autopilot are an interesting juxtaposition against some of the others from Tesla defenders:

Garbage. I never trusted or really used Bluecruise (hands free) however I never, ever had phantom braking in my Mach-E using their plain old ADAS system. Doing the trip to my parent's house and back home in my MY I really can not use even basic features like speed assist anymore because I'm scared shitless of phantom braking. The last one was a very hard brake for no reason at all, and the car behind me had to swerve away. I really, really can't even trust the entire system anymore, and I only use it if there are no other cars on the road at all.
I have a 2021 MME premium rwd and use Bluecruise all the time. The only hard braking I ever got was when somebody suddenly cut in front of me and braked. It was required. I often drive during rush hours and appreciate it handling the heavy or stop-and-go traffic. In some cases, the car slows to the posted speed limit (+10km) in construction zones where everybody else ignores it. You just have to reset the speed, and the slowing is not hard braking.
I am curious if they will over the air add the auto line change, but in reality, when I want to line change, I just steer the car to the new line. As soon as it is lined, Bluecruise kicks in.

I'm driving around in a Hertz model Y with 21k miles on it this week on vacation. Gonna do a video on it. TLDR: I don't get why there's so many people loving this car, I found so many of the same serious problems right away.

Wtf with the windshield wipers being on the touch screen like that? I was in a huge rainstorm when picking it up and auto wipers don't work well and you have to play a videogame to change wiper speed. This is not a better future!

Making my kids fart on a road trip is worth something though.

The funny part is the reddit OP can't switch cars because he relies on the tech from tesla lol.

Yep - The wife's Model 3 has that window down bug. When we close the door it wont roll up all the way. Also, wind noise is pretty bad and it has so many quality control issues. We just havent had time to take it in to be looked at. Both front seats have their plastic pieces falling off, I can see a wiring harness between the weather strip and side panel where the seat belt is, the door creaks when we open/close it, A pillar cover can come off with a gentle tug.
I just don't see how you can ask $50K+ for a vehicle like that. The prices are in the "luxury" segment but sit inside a Mercedes or BMW BEV and there is a stark difference in the cabin quality and details. Teslas are just not for me primary due to the reliance on the center console and lack of AA. But I do like how they look and absolutely appreciate the Supercharger network. I also feel that Tesla is good for the BEV movement overall. I'm just shocked it is still having these basic quality issues.

Why isn’t this a recall issue?! This sounds horribly unsafe, particularly on busy highways!

All of the aforementioned problem automatic features are why I think both governments and insurers should insist that manufacturers must share software architecture for review and approval. No way safety of vehicle passengers and vehicles in close proximity should be subject to injury - and psychological distress - because the software is architected and coded poorly.

Certainly whatever modeling simulation Tesla uses does not catch these flaws, let alone production road testing.

Small government and limited oversight advocates may not agree, but protecting people's safety is a legitimate government role. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is an example of an industry organization that does much good. It could add a software evaluation program to work with manufacturers.

As a business matter, consider how much better the software would be if one or more outside third-parties worked with manufacturers to establish vehicle software standards, then to ensure those standards are implemented. Just consider Lucid's numerous problems. They would be far more profitable if their initial rollout were successful, not to mention their second rollout...perhaps third rollout will be successful?! Pay the price now or pay the price later. The immediate (have to sell products) always delays the inevitable (deliver a quality product).

BC has phantom-braked only once on me. 528 towards Cocoa Beach - I was trying to pass three cars on the left and the Mach-E just randomly slowed down hard.

My Model 3s/Ys... a lot. At least a dozen times.

Here's my personal ranking of the EVs I've owned recently... it's been so long since I've owned the ID.4 I didn't bother ranking it. And the MINI electric would be bottom on all categories except fun-factor.

To me... I value cargo space, driver assist, and visibility because otherwise I would have kept the BMW i4. The death knell was when extended family visited and I didn't use the BMW i4 to ferry them around and there was no way I would have fit all the luggage in.
