Given the lack of a Thule/Yakima solution on the horizon, I thought I'd take the plunge with a Seasucker vacuum rack, as a few folks on here have talked about doing. I bought their Board Rack and tried fitting it last week. No concerns about how strong the suction is, but unfortunately its not high enough for items on it to clear the shark fin antenna. Even using my own pads (which are substantially thicker than the ones that come with the rack), a surfboard on the rack only clears the antenna by millimeters - not enough, when you factor in vibrations on the road.
Its possible that I could make enough clearance by playing with positioning, for example by moving the front bar way forward so the rear of the board tilts up. But that feels too hacky for me. I'm going to exchange the item for Seasucker Monkey Bars, which appear to be higher. It is a bit frustrating that Seasucker don't publish the important height dimension on their website. Will report back on this thread on how that works out.
