Given the lack of a Thule/Yakima solution on the horizon, I thought I'd take the plunge with a Seasucker vacuum rack, as a few folks on here have talked about doing. I bought their Board Rack and tried fitting it last week. No concerns about how strong the suction is, but unfortunately its not high enough for items on it to clear the shark fin antenna. Even using my own pads (which are substantially thicker than the ones that come with the rack), a surfboard on the rack only clears the antenna by millimeters - not enough, when you factor in vibrations on the road.

Its possible that I could make enough clearance by playing with positioning, for example by moving the front bar way forward so the rear of the board tilts up. But that feels too hacky for me. I'm going to exchange the item for Seasucker Monkey Bars, which appear to be higher. It is a bit frustrating that Seasucker don't publish the important height dimension on their website. Will report back on this thread on how that works out.

And if you change the position of the surfboard more to te left, is it then not possible?

Yeah, that's close enough to make you nervous.

The MME really should have come with a hitch (bikes, skis, boards etc). Even if the car still had a zero trailer load rating.

Maybe, but the rack is narrow which means the board can’t be positioned off-center on the rack, and I don’t want to limit myself from buying wider boards in the future. The tolerances are just too tight for comfort.

maybe by moving the front bar foward it would in turn raise the board behind the rear bar

So I replaced the Board Rack with Monkey Bars, which arrived today. I did a quick fit check. They sit a decent bit higher than the Board Rack and I'm confident that once they're positioned properly in front of the shark fin and fitted with thick pads, whatever is mounted on them will clear the antenna adequately. I think they look pretty decent too.

I'll post back with more impressions once I've had a chance to load them and try them on the road.

Photo, with apologies for my dusty car.

I got to take the Mach E with Monkey Bars loaded with a heavy SUP on a round trip to the beach at the weekend. I left the suction cups attached overnight the night before leaving and there appeared to be no loss of pressure. The car is not so high that they are a pain to load. They are easy to attach and remove.

The only big downside I can think of is that it would be really easy for a thief to make off with them, if he knew how to make off with them.

No issues to report, basically. I’ll report back if I run into any issues in the long term.

Probably means no overnight or long, unattended parking with it onboard. What about a cable & lock wrapped snugly enough that makes it a pita to try to attempt?

Yup, that’s the only neat solution that I can think of. Caveats being:
1. It would be more effective for a bike than a surfboard/kayak/etc. Might not be easy to secure a cable to a board
2. It’s probably better at securing the item on the rack than the rack itself. In my case, the rack is worth more than the load.

I have one, it's the huge one. It has 4 cups on it. I possibly introduce it when I'm going to utilize it and ensure the cups and rooftop are perfect. I have had no issues. I feel like if it somehow managed to fall flat surely just each cup would flop in turn not every one of the 4 at the same time. I accept whenever utilized appropriately and dealt with it will keep going quite a while and fills my need very well as a rack for voyaging. Every last one of the four SeaSucker Vacuum Mounts is PULL RATED at more than 210 lbs so your street or trailblazing bicycle is in SAFE HANDS. You can introduce them inside the space of SECONDS with negligible work and they work on the most stretched out scope of vehicles.
