Notice how Benjamin stands further away from the lift gate so he's not in the way of the door opening? Then he moves his leg in a simple kicking motion and the gate opens or closes.

Hopefully this helps others...

Besides proper technique, I think many of us have vehicles with body control module and/or PaaK quirks that need to be fixed for this to work more reliably -- the same issues causing the door open buttons to fail on the first try.
