These electricians must be like "oh great another mach e person taking pictures for the forum"
They arrived thinking they were installing a Tesla charger. I scolded them, even though they have never heard of a mach-e.

Probably charged you double thinking it was a Tesla. When people have come by to give me quotes they ask and I reply, "problem some Chevy." Don't take that the wrong way Bolt owners. Just trying to keep the price down.

why do you need a second meter? Is that a state/power company thing or needed for the actual charger?

My electric utility company requires a second meter for EV time-of-day billing, so that'd be my guess.

I don't NEED a second meter. But yes, I get cheaper electric rates if I do time of use rates for the charger. Doing time of use rates for the whole house would be expensive for me, so it's better to split it out. Plus a $500 rebate from the power company (DTE) for installing the station.

The electrician just quoted what I think is a fair price. Second meter install, add new sub-panel for this new circuit, 60 feet of #6 copper wire, 50 amp breaker with 14-50 receptacle, install and test the charging station, plus a new 20 amp circuit with two receptacles in the garage...all for $1,280. All I have to do afterward is call DTE to come an plop in the second meter, easy.

Holy sh!t. Why does it cost me $1k for a 14-50 socket, 50amp breaker, and 40 feet of #6?

#6 Cu wire is expensive and very hard to pull. $36 on Home Depot for 50' and you need 4 conductors. Has to be run in 1" conduit.

I paid around $3 a foot at Lowe’s for 6 gauge Romex 3 conductor and ground wire.
