This is mainly for Ford software engineers to see, but please feel free to chime in if I'm missing something.

Every time I receive an OTA software update the motion sensors default to "on." I keep the sensors off, so its highly annoying having to go into the settings everytime I receive an update to turn them off. My family sometimes likes to stay in the car when I run errands, and I always turn off the car and keep my keys on me when I leave. Imagine having to run back to the car after receiving a call from my wife that the car alarm is going off. Thank you!

This was assumed to be a bug, in that every time you turn the car on again, motion sensors default to “on,” unrelated to software updates.

Someone finally got confirmation from Ford, there’s a thread on it somewhere, that this is intended. The same way the power down timer in settings always defaults to “on.”

For your circumstance, it’s pretty odd to turn the car off. You’d see virtually no battery loss and why wouldn’t you just leave it on for your family?

Ah I see. Thanks for the information. I turn it off out of request from the wife. I like the car cold and she likes it warm, so turning it off and walking away is convenient as the A/C will be off and she can thaw for a few minutes.

Maybe take advantage of dual-zone automatic climate control? That’s what passengers in my car do.

I wonder what the reason is why you can't permanently disable the motion sensors though. I like the idea that they would alert someone to a child accidentally left in the rear seats of a car, but other than that, if you don't have much or any fear of your car being broken into, why wouldn't they let you disable that?

I remember leaving the window open on the car inside my garage once before I realized the motion sensors would always be on. My toddler really liked seeing the pony puddle lamps, so we walked really close to the car to make the lamps light up. The alarm started going off in the closed garage and my child lost it. For a couple weeks he was afraid of my car because he thought the alarm would go off every time he got near it.

I'm surprised you've only noticed it after an OTA update since it resets to on every time the car is powered off. Here's the thread about it:

I like that it asks each time. And I'd keep it on... It's the only way I found out that there was a bird scared $***less in my car. I was in line at the zoo and thought it was an alarm bug until I opened the car to find a little guy had snuck in and took about 10 dumps in 5 minutes. I can't imagine the damage he would've done in 2 hours.

I can see the response from the engineers. Oh, this is not a software bug. All you have to do is have two keys with you at all time and leave the second set for the people in the car. ;) (Yes, this is extreme sarcasm).

I've been bothered by this issue because there have been a couple times when I need to leave a passenger, or the dog in the car, or on a ferry. I found by testing the car that I can turn off the motion alarms in these situations as long as I go into the settings and do it before I turn the car off. This is not ideal but it works as long as I remember to do it. They will remain off until the car is turned on again when they default back to on.

There is still a problem though. Another choice the car gives me in the alarm settings is "Ask on exit". This does not work for me. When I select this, a dialog box comes up when I turn the car off, but then ignores my response. If I select no motion alarm they remain on anyway. From my perspective, this a glitch if the car asks for a choice and then ignores it. Does this sound familiar to anyone else or am I missing something?

Going on a trip next week that includes a ferry ride. Just wondering if anything new has been discovered to address the motion alarm issue?

Does going into settings and turning off the motion sensors before the car is turned off fix the problem?

The only way I have been able to turn off the motion sensors is to go into the settings and turn them off before you turn the car off. However, they are only off for that single key cycle. The next time the car cycles from on and then back to off, the sensors are armed again by default. The "ask on exit" function does not work for me at all. That dialog box comes up, but when I select "no" it is ignored.

My wife has stayed in the car multiple times without a key and not once has the alarm gone off. Of course the doors are not locked. I assume the alarm just isn’t set if door are unlocked,

am I wrong?

I was having a similar issue. I even left the key fob with my son in the car; the alarm still went off. I now have the car asking me whether or not to activate the motion sensors each time I power off. Hopefully that solves the issue.

I live alone and only have my son on weekends so this is not a constant issue for me but still annoying when it happens. Another situation where it would be nice to get an alert and be able to deactivate from the app.
