"KIDS, WE ARE LATE," I bellowed, trying to get them out the door for school this morning.
I unplugged the car from preconditioning, and my smallest daughter asked why the MME was charging when it had been plugged in all night. I told her it was preconditioning, and I explained why that was useful, particularly in hotter or colder weather.
She climbed into the car, and my boy got into the car, and we got him strapped into his booster for the trip to school. Note, I didn't mention I closed the charge port door.
I started to back out of the garage IN THE CAR I HAVEN'T HAD EVEN A WEEK YET, and I heard this sickening CRUNCH sound. I looked around in a panic and saw my charge port door looked like a quarterback's knee that had gone the wrong direction after a hit. I pulled back into the garage to see the charge port door cover on the floor.
Already late, I took the kids to school and then came back to assess the damage. Surprisingly, I found that there is only the most imperceptible dent in the fender panel--like you can't see it...you can only sort of feel it--and that the charge port door cover is held onto another panel that actually has the door pin lock. Looking at it, the door cover is connected to the pin lock panel by a series of clips and a sliding ramp. Nothing looked broken, no plastic looked stressed, and I saw where the pins aligned. I put the door about ¼ of the way off the right side, pressed down, and slid the door into place to the left with a CLICK as the ramp in the middle made contact and latched.
Maybe I just got lucky and this is the way they were always constructed, or maybe this is some kind of mitigation they built into the later models (mine was built the last week of June/first week of July), to ease the charge door denting issue where now if it goes too far, it pops off before damaging the fender (much). It's entirely possible I just got lucky as I was CREEPING out of the garage as I do, afraid to hit the sides, but I thought it was still an interesting note to convey about how the charge port door exterior plate attaches should this happen to one of you.
...and yes, I absolutely need to change my method of "unplug, holster charger, close charge port door" to "unplug, close charge port door, and holster charger."
