If you’ve got a pick a place to crash, shallow warm water on a warm sandy beech that isn’t a deserted island ain’t a bad way to go.

The pilot wasn't buzzing the beach for fun. It has one engine. It stopped working. That was the safest place to put it down.

Not to be pedantic, but in this case, I believe he “ditched” at sea, not “crashed”.

That’s a tough call when you’re the pilot in command. It’s also a two dimensional picture. I’m sure the PIC wasn’t aiming for swimmers. By the way, there’s an island in the Caribbean (I forget which one) where the approach used to be directly above a famous beach. There were lots of famous pictures of KLM 747s and other aircraft coming in maybe 10-15 feet above beach goers. Approaches into the old Hong Kong airport were also ... thrilling ?

Im going to hazard a guess that you are not a pilot, or if you are you have never experienced an engine out.
The PIC may very well have wanted to ditch another 100 feet off shore, but physics may have not made the a viable option.
Stopping a car and landing an air plane with engine failure are 2 very different animals.
As you slow down in a car it gets easier. In a plane it get exponentially harder.
