Connecticut is building an electric vehicle charging network.

Charging an electric vehicle in southern New England is about to get a lot easier. The two investor-owned utilities in Connecticut, Eversource and United Illuminating Company, have officially kicked off a program designed to spur the installation of more than 60,000 public and private charging stations in the state by 2030. The incentive program, which offers rebates and electric bill credits for homeowners and businesses that install chargers, was approved by Connecticut utility regulators last summer.

Electric vehicle chargers can cost the average homeowner anywhere from $1,000 to several thousand dollars to install, depending on the type of charger, the cost of labor, and whether a home needs any electrical wiring upgrades. Homeowners in Connecticut can now apply for a $500 rebate as well as $500 in funding for wiring upgrades to support the new chargers. On top of that, those who agree to allow their utility to slightly lower their charger’s energy use during times of peak electricity demand can earn an additional $100 up front and up to $200 per year in energy bill credits.

The program also incentivizes multifamily building owners and businesses to install chargers to the tune of up to $20,000, and the maximum rebate is doubled for chargers installed in underserved communities. The commercial incentives are even higher for fast-charging stations.

Connecticut’s program is well-timed: Federal incentives to install chargers expired at the end of last year. The government previously offered 30 percent off EV chargersand installation in the form of tax credits, up to $1,000 for homeowners and $30,000 for businesses. An extension of this program was included in the House of Representatives’ version of the Build Back Better Act, the spending bill that contains most of President Biden’s climate agenda, but the legislation’s fate is up in the air as Senate negotiations remain at a standstill.

I thought this was going to be an off topic thread about the NFL Chargers moving again. Oh well, I guess I’m happy. ;)

Welcome news for sure....the Tesla network is build out nicely in the state, but looking forward to getting more options while on the road.. Like many states, there's a need to add more DC fast chargers. I took a trip from where I live in eastern CT to western CT on Sunday and there weren't any easy on/off highway DC Fast Chargers between Manchester and Danbury. It's also a common state to drive through so will be welcome for the NY, NJ crowd passing by.

Yes, would be great for those trips along the coastal 95 corridor through CT. I often stop off at one of the rest stops along 95 for breakfast on the way up to New England and they only seem to have Tesla rapid chargers. I notice in the various apps that there are some MME friendly chargers along the way, but they are not right on 95.

There is 1 Chargepoint fast charger station in front of Mystic Aquarium which is next to the I-95, but only 1 station. There are 6 EA fast charger stations in Crystal Mall, on I-85 near I-95 in Watertown. That’s it. A fast charger desert on I-95 to rt 138 to Newport, RI.

Great; rushed to install my chargers before the end of 2021 for the federal credit. Should have waited and gotten more from CT.

Unfortunately that's a bit for for me if I want to charge while stopping for breakfast. It looks like there is one in Stratford just off 95 (Stratford Sq) and that might be doable but would love something a little closer, like Norwalk or Fairfield where we usually stop.

Meanwhile, back in Ohio, EV owners have to pay a $200 surcharge to register our vehicles.

This would be nice. The state really just needs a few more DCFC that are not Tesla and not just a single 25kW charger at a car dealership that is always ICE'd. Some suggested areas:
  • The TA, Target or Walmart in Southington
  • Walmart in Guilford or The Madison Service area(where there are, duh... Tesla Superchargers)
  • The Stonington Regal Movietheater, McDonald's, Stop&Shop
  • The Stop&Shop/Lowes/Target in Dayville
  • Enfield Square mall in the corner next to Wendy's or across the street next to BestBuy/McDonalds.
  • North Canaan where the Tesla superchargers are

Heck just copy wherever Tesla Superchargers are. They already did the work to space them out nicely.

Along with that, incentivize and prioritize grocery stores, movie theaters, offices and other places people will spend a few hours at.

Illinois is $100 per year. That’s about half of what the average ICE vehicle pays in state motor fuel taxes.

I'm hopeful they follow the rest stops on the Merritt & 95 and put super chargers alongside the existing Tesla chargers...
