We drove home from my doctor appointment yesterday during a deluge of rain. We drove home on the expressway going about 40-50 MPH with heavy rain and poor visibility. I could hear the water flushing the rear wheel when we were driving through the storm but I didn't notice any sounds or vibration going the rest of the way home.

Today, when backing the car out I can feel some pulsations and then in forward the pulsations increase in intensity and there is a "thumping" in the passenger side rear wheel (like there is a flat tire with some of the rubber hitting the pavement as the tire rotates only the tire is fine). The thumping increases in speed as the car accelerates. I took the car back to my garage immediately and called my dealer. I'm taking it in tomorrow morning.

My first thought is that this is a brake problem on that wheel from being drenched with water. Any other ideas of what might be causing this? A loose piece of brake pad material stuck to rotor? Problem with the rear motor? I'm pretty upset as this is the first major thing wrong with the car.

I want to post the “first time?” meme/gif. Welcome to the club. Let me guess, did you have the car dry in the garage?
I had the same thing happen and FREAKED out the day after I drove through my first big storm. I try to pull out slowly when I drive it for the first time after the rain, it will thump immediately when you first go, but then fine.

Yes, but those were front brake pads/rotors; also TSB for rear brakes too?
I‘m sure your front rotors were wet too. Take a look at all 4 and see if there are any chunks of brake pad stuck to them.

I wouldn't know what to look for or what I'm seeing. I took a quick cursory look at the passenger side rear wheel disc brake but didn't notice anything. I'm taking it in this morning to have them look at that wheel. Sounds like it might be what is referenced in the TSB but it is NOT the front brakes! If the TSB doesn't cover the rear brakes too then it's something else. If it is the brake pad having a piece come loose on the rotor then at least they'll know what to do. I hope parts availability doesn't become an issue.

It does ease my mind a bit knowing about the TSB and what has happened to others because I was concerned it might be something more serious like the rear motor malfunctioning.
