Towing with a Mach-E.

A trailer hitch for the Mach-E is rated to 2,000 pounds, with 200 pounds of tongue weight. 1,300 pound trailer. Table, furniture, tiles and all kinds of goodies. He "feels" like he's towing 2,000 pounds. If true, then with 13% tongue weight he's got 260 pounds of tongue weight and is over capacity.

Pretty irresponsible. Of course the Mach-E, per Ford (stated in the manual) is not approved for trailer towing at all.

Haven't read my payload off the doorjamb, but with a loaded vehicle and the ~2,000 pounds, he's likely quite a bit over payload.

Edit - and he's not very bright, because he's now put up a video showing him doing what the manual tells him not to. Should the vehicle have drivetrain or other issues related to towing, Ford has video proof of what he did.

In the EU the weight you are allowed to pull is 750kg(1667 pounds), tongue weight is only 30kg (67 pounds) exept when using a bike rack then it is 75kg(167 pounds).......

When 75kg bike rack mounted the numbers of Passengers in the back is restricted:

SR 2 front, 2 back
ER 2 front, 1 back
GT 2 front, none back

That must be why they don't allow for any towing or even have a bike rack option in the US. They know most Americans don't read the instructions!

If I weighed 200 pounds and each of my passengers weighed 200 pounds and we're on a trip each with 20 pounds of luggage, I'm hauling 880 pounds.

I don't see a tongue weight of a third of that to be much concern if the rest of the car just has my skinny butt in it.

As long as you're not doing jack-rabbit starts, 350hp and 450 pounds of torque seems more than capable of hauling a small trailer. It would be similar to climbing a hill.... or my driveway.

I'm sure range suffers, but I trust Ford tested for extremes.

Loading the cargo area with 150-190 pounds of trailer tongue doesn't make much difference given that the car weights 4,920 pounds. An extra passenger is that much added weight.....Monkey on an elephant's back.

Too many times people focus on PULLING a trailer, and not STOPPING a trailer.

Again, the doorjamb sticker lists payload. You have to subtract any mods made to the vehicle (floor mats, crap you're carrying in it, the hitch itself). Then you subtract your weight and the weight of all passengers and any stuff they bring with them. Then, the remaining number is how much the trailer tongue can weigh.

The hitch he had installed has a 525 lb tongue weight rating and 3,500 lb tow rating. It is the same hitch I ordered and should arrive today. I do not plan to tow a 2,000 lb trailer, but it is good to know I will be able to if I want.

And totally unrelated to the point of the video, the guy has the Ford hood deflector and Ford MME stripes installed! It is the first time I have seen a MME with those! The side stripes don't look that great, but the hood looks pretty good. Not sure about the deflector but I might try that one out.

I was curious and went out and photographed the door sticker. Payload is 918.

What does this mean?

I added plastic floor liners, and the heavy mat in the back. For this exercise, assume that's 50 pounds total. 50 more pounds in the frunk. Payload is now 818.

Trailer hitch is 50 pounds (guessing).

Let's assume you and wife weigh 330 together. Payload is now 918 - 100 -50 - 330 = 438.

So, mathematically, with 13% tongue weight, my loaded trailer can weight 438/.13 = 3,369 pounds. Of course that's likely too much for the Mach-E.

If I assume 2,000 pounds for the trailer, that's a hitch weight of 260. So working backwards => 918 - 260 - 100 - 50 = 508 pounds of people and their stuff in the vehicle.

If you had four 200 pound people in the vehicle, you can't tow.
