Will disabling the foot sensor prevent this?
Probably. It would be good if one of the folks who have frequently had the lift gate opening on its own try this. It is an option in the vehicle settings.

I've had my MME since March and a similar issue happened to me too. I walked into the garage and opened the garage door, then opened the driver side passenger door. As soon as I pressed the button on the door the liftgate opened as well. The garage door was still making its way up when this happened. Lucky for me the timing was such that the liftgate didn't hit the garage door.

I didn't have any direct sunlight behind the car at this time in the morning either, so I don't know what could have triggered it. Maybe a software bug since it happened when I opened the passenger door. The odd part is, I do this exact same process every day on my way to work and have never had an issue like this. I'm not taking any chances and will disable that sensor. If it happens again I can at least rule out the sensor as the culprit.

With some of the strange behavior reported about having to open a rear door before the front door etc., I would guess the foot sensor has nothing to do with it. Seems more like the BCM getting confused and opening things. YMMV.

Hi there, David! Can you send us a message if this hasn't yet been resolved? I'll see how I can assist.
My wife and I each have a Mach E and this spontaneous liftgate opening has occurred several times to each of us. Unfortunately, 2 days ago it happened with the garage door closed which resulted in deep scratches on the liftgate. My body shop said the scratches are too deep to rub out and that it will cost $1,500 approximately to repaint the entire liftgate!

We are VERY unhappy!!!

Not sure what Ford’s position will be on taking care of the damage caused by this obvious defect?

(Considering contacting NHTSA as this can be a potential safety issue in addition to damaging your lift gate: unsuspecting passers-by, vehicle in motion when it occurs, etc.)

My car is kept Pristine inside the garage. The garage door clearence to the back of the car is about 5 inches. I was working out using the TRX app on the phone near the car. The garage door was open during my workout. At some point I closed the grage door because my dog came in. After a while I looked and realized my trunk looked wedged open. It had opened on its own without me hitting any button. I can only speculate that since my phone was close to the car that when the garage door closed the sensor underneath the bumper picked up the movement and opened the trunk. Which I will turn off moving forward (and I like that feature). Just annoyed, I am sure someone can buff out these scratches but I just don't want to deal with it.

Exactly the same thing happened to me. I now try to make sure the car is parked where if the back opens it won't hit anything.

My tailgate opened on own this morning for the first time. Luckily there was no damage.

It was setting in the garage in it’s usual spot with the garage door closed. We have not pets. I believe it was locked. It had just finished charging at 07:24 per the logs. The tailgate opened at 07:25 per the logs. I wish the logs would say when the car locks and unlocks. Is there any other way to tell?

Makes me worry that this might happen when parked outside at the mall or at a restaurant.

Happened to me, too. And I've got the scrapped-off paint to prove it.

Has this happened to anyone who has turned off the kick sensor option? Does not seem like any instances have happened outside, all parked in a garage with the door closed?

Don't have my car yet but I do have a short garage. Just ordered this stuff in the hopes of not having this bug damage my car...

Happened to me again the other night. Again while in my garage and locked. Thankfully no damage.
I am also concerned about it happening outside.

Question for everyone who has had it happen. Were you within key fob or PAAK range when it happened? Is your garage close enough to your living space.

My garage is under my living room , so conceivably I was within PAAK range.

My Key and PAAK were in range of the MME. The MME was locked unless it unlocks while being charged (I hope not).

I keep my key on a hook in the garage because the PAAK has set off the car alarm when I opened the door so I need to quickly get to the key to silent the alarm.

You could turn SecuriAlert on so you would know the exact time it opened. That might help narrow down the cause. It would also give you peace of mind that it wasn't opening when you're out in public.

Mine opened while I was cleaning the rear glass, pretty sure it was the hands free opening from my feet under the back end. My garage door was closed, so I was pinned between the hatch opening and the garage door. The liftgate never stopped going up, I slid myself out to the side, but was shocked the liftgate did not stop opening when encountering so much resistance. Hasn't opened on it's own to my knowledge. But many times when I do open it, there is a different jingle of beeps like some kind of alert. Not sure what it is trying to tell me? If there is a safety feature that prevents the hatch from closing on a person or object, would it have the same safety feature for opening? I may need to make sure there is always a lot of room behind the vehicle when parked in the garage so this kind of thing doesn't happen to anyone again.
