Ok that sounds exactly like what happened to me. My car was locked though. I was above it in my living room.

I’m wondering if the kick sensor detects something, a glitch, and because the phone or key are in range, it opens.

Seems like a significant bug that needs to be fixed.
My scratch would agree :(

Happy to help - if I can help prevent any future scratches! Sensor was turned on - it is now off.
Sorry this happened to you -- I think I'm turning off that sensor first thing after I get the car into my garage. I have a short garage, this bug worries me. Gotta be the sensor.

I don't think the kick sensor is the issue in these cases. The proximity sensor in the liftgate would also have to be sending a false signal that the fob/phone was in range. The device needs to be within a few feet of the liftgate for the kick sensor to work.

Thats what I’m trying to figure out. So far at least 3 of us on this thread have been “in range” for either the fob or our phones.

I want everyone to comment if they were in range when it happened. That would make sense why it was able to respond if a false kick was detected.

I was in range when mine opened. Both my phone (PAAK) and key fob were in range.

I back into my garage for this reason. I would have the car sitting in the driveway and the trunk would randomly open without me even holding my phone at all. It's been a while, but I've seen it firsthand.
That is my worst nightmare.
Were you near it when it happened?

I’m betting most of us were in range, or at least had PAAK Bluetooth connected. I wonder if the kick sensor is sending faulty signals.

Yeah, I was sitting in the garage in my folding chair just enjoying a summer day. Thing just opened on its own and I didn't even have my phone with me. It happened one other time, but nothing since.

I bet this is the case. It's probably also why I haven't read any instances where this is happening in parking lots in public. Key and paak isn't generally in range.

Yeah, I’m just concerned about my driveway. It’s close enough that sometimes the welcome lights trigger. That presumably means the kick sensor is active.

What I've been trying to explain is that the foot sensor range is much shorter than the general keyless entry range. I set my phone on the hood and the foot sensor would not work. Although I found that the range isn't as short as the manual says when the phone is at the rear of the car. You could do some testing to see what functions work when you have your phone/fob in the locations they would've been when the unwanted opening occurred.

Yeah I’ll have to try. I have left my phone upstairs (above the garage) and tried the kick, it did work once, not every time though.
