Unfortunately, as far as I know, it has not been determined that the cause is a faulty sensor. Also, it has not been able to be duplicated on demand in a Service Department. That said, I suspect that it may somehow be related to “Phone as a Key” (PaaK).
I'm in the process of investigating this issue (going on about a month). I haven't raised it as a topic here yet because I just didn't have enough to go on.

I am experiencing the same issue with no animals in the garage. Unless the rats count? I've had the trunk magically open, but only when home and never when I'm at work or in public. I also assume it has something to do with PaaK, but I haven't been able to replicate it on demand. It's just a really weird event that happens from time to time. I have been trying to intercept the BT communication with the car to see if there's something going on, but since it's always happened when I'm not capturing BT I just haven't got lucky enough yet.

I did perform an RFA module update today, so it's one of the things I'm going to be on the lookout for to see if it resolves the ghost in the trunk issue.

Since it only happens at home and since I back into the garage (prior EV charger was on the other side) I don't care if it opens because it won't hit anything. If this was happening in public I would be extremely concerned.

One thing to consider, don't park within BT range of wherever you are eating/working/patronizing otherwise it might cause it to open.

I would recommend that anyone who stumbles across this, that has PaaK enabled, make sure your trunk, in the open position, doesn't hit anything.

Ok, but it opening with nothing under the car would seem to be fault though. I think the sensitivity level could be turned down a bunch.
Just a comment: there are at least a couple threads about folks complaining that they can’t get the hatch to open consistently by the foot sensor. Implying it’s not sensitive enough.
This combination of problems might point towards a quality issue with the sensor calibration consistency.

Having seen this string months ago, thankfully, first thing I did when I got the car to my driveway was adjust the hatch opening height so that it was low enough not to hit when my garage door is open. Button on the left of the open hatch allows you to program maximum hatch height. Admittedly I have to stoop over a bit to put things in the back, but the peace of mind is worth it. Would be nice if customers were given a heads-up by the dealers about it when they do their walk through at delivery (assuming they all still do that). Mine didn't mention it, so glad I saw this string early. That said, this is not a feature unique to the Mach, so I expect this issue has been around for a while. Better communication on the part of salespeople could help avoid this expense and aggravation.

Unless I missed the post, there has been no evidence provided that the kick sensor has anything to do with the phantom opening. Someone guessed early on that it was the culprit and now it seems to be taken as fact.

The thinking behind this is, when the kick sensor is disabled the problem goes away. I think that’s why everyone is suspecting the kick sensor.

AFAIK it's an intermittent problem. Switching hands free off may or may not be the reason it hasn't done it again.

At least in my experience, as I mentioned, this has only happened to me while at home and I spend probably less time at home than I do away from home. That's led me to believe that it's either PaaK, due to constant in range, or some sort of electrical interference triggering the sensor. I don't know the answer yet and I haven't had it happen enough to do a thorough process of elimination.

Either way, I don't think it will happen when you're out of range of the car. So even if it was a faulty kick sensor, when you're not near the car it shouldn't activate. Same as a door unlocking, when not in range in won't unlock. This is, in part, why it's happening to people at home because their phone is in range to allow the opening of the trunk.

Yep - speculating is one of things we do best here!?

Never had to do that with our Tesla’s . . . Just saying.
LOL.

I was 1 week away from buying a model Y last June and there was like a 50 page thread about this same problem except rather than the hatch opening on its own, it was randomly forgetting the set height you had it set to and at max height it was hitting most people's garages so everyone was having the EXACT same problems.

But do go on. Meanwhile, 20 dollars of pool noodles later my risk has been mitigated. The horror.

Ford Mustang Mach-E Trunk opened on its own and hit the garage door... Come on Ford!!! 1638060579844

Unfortunately this is just a work around.
A workaround that solves the risk is a solution to the problem.

What about the hinges?
