Anyone seen this? Looks like we’re getting BlueCruise hands-free driving in the U.K. next year! I really hope so. https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/business-tech,-development-and-manufacturing/how-level-3-autonomous-driving-will-reshape
Regarding getting BCHF in the UK -- bravo! It's about time. You will really enjoy it.

About this article though... 🤕

It's riddled with errors due to the author and editors' lack of understanding that automation and autonomy are not the same thing. They are doing a disservice to readers, who may become overly confident in their vehicles capabilities, putting everyone around them at undue risk.

Various aspects of driving can be automated, such as speed control, steering, and headlights. None of these alone should warrant an intelligent human driver to cede control and allow the vehicle to operate autonomously.

The article then leaps into Level 2+ -- this does not even exist. Ford's Blue Cruise Hands Free capability is Level 2, not "2+". There is no such thing as SAE Level 2+.

Then it goes into discussions of Level 3 automation, which some manufacturers are claiming to provide but still -- vehicles with so called Level 3 automation are NOT autonomous. A human driver is still required, and must be ready to retake control at a moment's notice.

Then the article abruptly switches over to mention Cruise and Argo AI and how much money they've spent... Without ever mentioning that what those companies are/were working towards was Level 4 automation... Which is a completely different approach then Levels 2 and 3 (not a natural progression).

I dunno, the whole thing just seems a mess of words to me.

Level 2+ is something Mobileye (manufacturer of our BlueCruise hardware) decided to coin. Basically it means completely hand-free mode while the driver supervises. BlueCruise is Level 2+. It's not an official SAE level but is positioned between SAE L2 and SAE L3 in terms of functionality.

As stated in the Mobileye blog that you linked, it's a term coined by their CEO. Personally, I see this as purely marketing, not an engineering term. It's too bad that some vehicle manufacturers and many bloggers and writers are promoting the term as though it was vetted by the industry.

Perhaps it's just a nit, but Mobileye manufacturers some of our BlueCruise hardware. Perhaps only the windshield camera and IPMA module? I'm not sure.

It's an important distinction in the sense that some but not all capabilities advertised by Mobileye are integrated into our vehicles. By the same token, Ford's ADAS in the Mach-E contains many components and features not provided by Mobileye. Thus an intersection of features, not a superset or subset.

I agree with your criticism of the quality of the article but TBH I tuned out after I read that BlueCruise was coming to the U.K. 🤣

I'll believe it when I see it. Not too bothered about BC although would be nice to see the UK at the same OTA version level as the U.S.

I don't trust/use most of the driver assistance aids that came with the car as it is. I am certainly NOT going to pay for Bluecruise (if it does eventually come to the UK). I am sure the insurance companies will have something to say about it.

Cool but I do not have any of the Blue Cruise-enabled hardware. It would be good to get any updates though.

Any ideas why this has to be done via FDRS? I’ve got my power supply, mongoose cable (tomorrow) and FDRS license but just curious why its not enabled but can be enabled…
Purely because Ford can’t get their 💩 together enough to roll it out OTA in a timely manner🤣

ha! Ok we’ll that makes sense. Looking forward to the cable and actually doing these updates that they seem incapable of doing OTA!
If you need any help with the updates drop me a line - I’m just up the road
