Waze not working via Android App anymore?

I can only find a very old thread about this, but Waze stopped connecting in via Android App to my Navigation screen. Is there a solve for us? I don't trust the native Navigation app to consider traffic, for example.

If the icon isn't showing up on the Android Auto screen at all, the only way I've fixed this in the past is to disconnect your phone (or turn the car off) and then open the app on your phone first and click around a bit. Close it, then try it all again from the car.

I've seen this occasionally and it feels like it happened after Waze updated. But couldn't figure out what actually caused it. Definitely a Waze/AA issue, not necessarily a Ford problem. I've had this on AA in other vehicles too.
