Weird to feel guilty about cancelling an order and buying on the lot from another dealer?

Talk about a dealer trying to lay the guilt trip. My original dealer has been doing this over and over since I canceled my order. The car came in the way I didn't want it, and if I'm spending $60K on a vehicle, it better damn well be the way I want it. I went elsewhere to buy it. I called them today after getting the runaround tonight about my deposit refund. No one has said I won't get it, but I'm not getting it so far. Called the GM of the dealership and he proceeds to tell me that he will not 'allow' anyone to buy either of my originally ordered vehicles to anyone that has an order elsewhere, because they don't want to subject another dealership elsewhere to what I did to them. Puhleeze! Really? I questioned why they're not advertising their ADM on their website, when I clearly saw they were each marked up $10K on the lot, and he proceeded to lie and say they weren't. My wife and I both saw the markup in the window of each car. Clearly a bait and switch to get people in. They're in no rush to sell and are holding out for the highest bidder, all the while holding on to my deposit until one or both are off their hands. So @Illinibird, don't count on ever getting a call back from them.
Oh don't I know it! When Susan and I first came in to your dealership we were greeted by a very nice young man who was now our salesman. He was professional, seemed very honest and was basically just a nice guy. When we sat down and talked, I told him I had the EXACT same car on order and I was receiving it at X-Plan pricing. I added that we were really there to see Infinite Blue Metallic and Space Grey in person (which is why we were there). He told me they could match that price (I knew he was wrong but I know he believed it). He asked us if we wanted to drive it and I said "sure" immediately. When we got back he asked if we liked it and I said yes and would buy it if I received X-Plan pricing. This is where the GM came into the equation. Over the phone when I called them I was told it was $10,000 over MSRP. The assistant GM asked us to take a seat and then proceeded to meet with the GM. I think they were very "proud" to offer the car at MSRP plus $3,000 ADM. I said no but countered at offering MSRP when he asked me how much I'd pay. Back to the GM and he came back at "only" $2,000 over MSRP. Susan and I thanked them for their time snd left. They said they would call if they decided to lower the price and I said fine but also said the car was originally purchased at X-Plan price and felt I should be offered the same courtesy. They went into some BS story about you backing out of original deal and how now they couldn't sell it again at X-Plan price but I knew they just wanted to make more money. Bottom line to this saga is that I am remaining with my original dealer and my original price at X-Plan level and hopefully, will get my car by June (or July at the latest). I would have jumped at X-Plan or MSRP pricing at the second dealer but no more then that. My phone has been strangely silent. ;)

I was talking with my dealer (post-sale) and he mentioned that Ford is holding the dealerships "responsible" in some way for the number of reservations/orders that get closed with the original reservation holder. It sounded like a formal reporting process and he's concerned about the number of people backing out because of this, regardless of whether they can sell them immediately to someone else.

Maybe one of the Ford folks can confirm whether this is actually a factor.
If you made a reservation and stick with the same dealer through order and sale they get an extra $500 from Ford.

I did this. I changed from my original order to get an FE, I haven’t received it yet because it is still in transit. But had no concern cancelling
The dealer involved in your order has very little skin in the game for you buying that vehicle. I did the same thing and paid a$3k ADM which I believe is a good trade off for a 6-9 month wait.

Brian - I did the same thing. Found one that was Infinite Blue and Light Space Grey AWD with Std battery; MSRP with ADM. Hated to pay it but I had lost 3-4 possible cars in the past several months because I insisted on no ADM and the dealers said they'd sell to someone else and they did. I'm sure my dealer whom I ordered with will do ADM and isn't that upset since I had the X-Plan and he wasn't making that much. BUT, I take pride in that I try to always follow through to completion the things that I start. In this case it is dragging on for so long that I feel justified in going in a different direction and buying retail.

so, a few questions:
  • how has your current dealer been? have they communicated? have they given a crap at all about your purchase?
  • this is a business transaction ultimately. do you think they earned your business?
  • will you feel "funny" having service done there afterwards (you shouldn't)?
ultimately, I 100% guarantee that if you cancel, they will sell almost immediately. So they will be just fine.
This is the correct answer. The dealer I am working with said just as much up front. "Hey if for some reason you cancel (a lot can happen in 24+ weeks) we will just sell the car off the lot, they are only staying here a few days".

Win Win. Don't feel bad. It sounds like you a good person who is someone who's word means something to yourself.

I’m not feeling too guilty because I know they will just sell to someone else and probably mark it up and make even more $$$.

I ordered in January, found an orphan and purchased it in April, and my ordered car arrived at the dealer a week ago.

They added a $7500 ADM sticker and the car was gone the next day. So no, I didn't feel bad at all. (Not sure how much ADM they actually got, but I doubt it sold for MSRP/X-Plan as it would have to me.)
