What the heck stays connected to trunk hooks?!?!

Unless hanging straight down, i have not figured how to attach a cargo net strap, cord, or grocery bag handle to the odd triangular hooks in the trunk. Any looped cord simply slides up and off. Completely useless. Would like to attach a cargo net or stretchy cord across the hooks to retain grocery bags from tipping. Cords dont stay on the hooks!?!?!
