Spending the 2000's traveling for work meant only about 2000 - 3000 miles per year on my cars. Working from home for the past decade, not much more.

Some of these years are guestimates, but I think I've got all the cars here:
  1. 1986 Isuzu Pup - 17th birthday present - totalled before I was 18
  2. 1998 Dodge Stratus - my 3rd choice on the used lot, I was too tall for the Saturn and hated the visibility in the Mitsubishi Eclipse
  3. 2002 Toyota 4Runner - Back when it had all the downsides of a truck without the utility
  4. 2005 Nissan Xterra - Honestly, they need to bring the Xterra back, it was an awesome utility vehicle but 14mpg wasn't doing it for me
  5. 2007 Honda Civic - liked the gas mileage, hated the rest
  6. 2009 Chevy Equinox - Had a known issue with fuel leaking into the oil pump
  7. 2012 Toyota Prius - best feature was a solar sunroof that generated enough power to run a circulating fan when you parked and it was hot out so the interior stayed near ambient temperature; but couldn't beat the mileage on a long commute
  8. 2018 BMW X3 - awesome car, until the complimentary maintenance ran out
  9. 2021 Mustang Mach E - The most maddening, frustrating, flawed, buggy car that I absolutely love

Ahh, the Xterra. A buddy of mine had one and every time I think of it I remember the look on his wife's face when she came home and we had both seats, door panels and dash pieces removed and on the garage floor. But hey, we needed to run the subwoofer lines and dynamat everything else.

Haha, I really wanted an xterra but just couldnt get past the gas mileage! Thats why I stuck with my Jeep Cherokee, you drive in RWD and got decent MPG, then could flip to 4 and keep up with anything.

Owned most vehicles when on the other side of the pond before relocating to the USA in the 90s, plenty of cheap run about not worth a mention but ones I remember fondly.

UK

1982 Ford Capri 2.8
1984 VW Golf Gti
1985 Peugeot 205 Gti
1986 Ford Sierra Cosworth
1989 Ford Sierra Xr4x4 (with turbo technics twin turbo conversion)
1991 Ford Sierra Sapphire Cosworth 4x4
1992 Ford Escort Cosworth

UKs crippling insurance rates at times made some of these Fords uninsurable forcing early sales :(

USA

Nothing else besides these.

1996 VW Golf GTi Vr6
2003 VW Golf R32
2006 Audi RS4
2009 Nissan GTR
2013 Ford Focus ST
2016 Ford Focus RS
2021 Mach-e

So plenty of Fords back in the the UK but it took until 2013 before they offered anything over here that made me want to actually go out and purchase and own it. Focus RS was a major let down was expecting far better for the return of an AWD RS after such a long hiatus, still I made money on the GTR it was sold for and then sold it during the used prices increases madness during the pandemic so can't grumble.

Mach-e has worked well for what I wanted it for and a pleasant toe dip into the world of owning an EV but unless Ford makes major improvements with the refresh Ford will once again be staying off the menu for me on this side of the pond..

Neon - another accident victim, “crumpled like a Coke can” in a 20 mph or lower accident
Contour - accident took it out within a month
‘04 RAV4 - simple, basic, functional, and may survive nuclear holocaust or alien invasion — still in the family, kind of oddly attached to it considering it was my wife’s car
‘13 Escape - fast but ridiculously thirsty 2.0 EB
‘14 CX-5 - base trim, best true automatic I’ve owned
‘16 RAV4 Hybrid - the electrons were calling, quickly hated not having any useful EV only speed/range
‘16 Civic - too low, passenger seat too uncomfortable
‘18 Bolt - fantastic car (aside from slow road trip charging and bouncy ride, sound familiar?) but took the buyback
‘22 Escape PHEV - lemoned, wouldn’t charge from Day 1
‘21 Red Mach-E P4X - luckily available new nearby just as the lemoned Escape was being repurchased
‘22 Grabber Blue Mach-E P4X - the color.

‘98 NB TDI 5MT untouched as favorite car until the Mach-E, 40-50 mpg, cheap fuel (back in the day), and so many road trips
‘ 95 E300D - slow, timeless design, and insanely smooth non-turbo I6 diesel but suspension repair was too pricey for me
‘08 Mazda 3i - only flaws were being an AT and choppy ride on 17” wheels
‘04 RAV4 - my turn behind the wheel of the car that won’t die
‘14 Odyssey - kids, right? Hated the lack of space in the Escape when traveling with newborn and the massive accoutrements
‘16 RAV4 Hybrid - also from above, until the VW deal was done, maybe 1 week
‘17 Golf Sportwagen 5MT - too small for the dog and 2 kids and 2 adults and luggage
‘18 Pacifica eHybrid - thought I’d keep it for a decade, quickly realized BEV > PHEV and worked for our use case
‘22 Mach-E Iced Blue PRstd - flawed but finally a car to dethrone the NB. Hoping i keep it a long time, but knowing the next gen of EVs will be enticing & the kids will need cars at some point.
