I think it’s because they’re intentionally shipped from the factory a little over inflated. Dealers should lower the pressure during prep, but most don’t seem to.
tbf I shipped from the factory a little overinflated too.

Same here. Took delivery at 43. Brought them down to 39 and a noticeably improved ride was the result.

Temperature has a noticeable effect on tire pressures. Rule of thumb is about 1 psi for every 10 degrees F.
There is always a flood of people bringing their vehicles to the dealer after the first cold snap with low tire pressure lights on. ;)
for a constant volume, P2 = P1*T2/T1 - ideal gas law

Makes sense to me. They figure the car will be stationary for several weeks in transport - higher pressure helps with avoiding a "flat spot" in the tire. I always bump up the tire pressure before my wife's "barn queen" Mercedes sits in one spot for the winter.

For that to work, the temperatures must be absolute. It's not correct using degrees F (or C).
correct - T1 and T2 must be in degrees Kelvin
