While we wait for Elon to open up access to his Superchargers, we can use the Tesla destination chargers with an adapter. TeslaTap has 40, 50, 60, and 80 amp adapters. Which one would be best to use when we are on the road and a Tesla destination charger is the best option?

Even before we can access Supercharges, destination chargers can help reduce some range anxiety.

TeslaTap Mini, 60 Amp

You want at least the 60 Amp to handle the MME's potential draw.

Thanks all. I should have searched the forum since the question is already answered. Mea culpa.

I'll go with the 60 mini or the 50.

For some reason I was thinking the MME could pull 55A. That's why I linked the 80A adapter. ??

I‘m thinking the 80A, to be somewhat future proofed. I only plan to keep the MME for 3 years, and then, will probably move on to something else.

The 50 is too low if you're going with the rule of reserving 20% for continual power. The Tesla Tap people want you in the 60 or greater for the MME because the MME can pull 48. Think of it as the circuit breaker rating on your home's EVSE. A 60 amp breaker can safely sustain 48 amps, a 50 can sustain 40, etc.

I just got my TeslaTap Mini 60 today, as a matter of fact. Surprisingly substantial and weighty in the hand. Just feels like a quality product overall.

You might want to consider paying the extra $$ for the 80 if you are also considering buying an F150 Lightning.

There was an earlier thread, but basically the TeslaTap guys say 50A is enough. Mini only comes in 40 and 60 so you'd have to get the 60. Some people are saying to be safe you should get 20% more than draw, so that's where you get the 60A. But like I said, the people who make the thing say that 50A is sufficient. I'm sure there are people out there using the 40A just fine because no engineer builds a 40A device that completely melts once you pump 41A into it but why risk it to save a few bucks?

TL;DR: 50A is what TeslaTap recommends (go ask them yourself if you want). 60A if you want an extra safety margin. Mini is nice, but the regular isn't that bulky to be honest.

Here's the older thread:

Forum comes through again! Just switched to the 50A. 5 minute call. They were very nice and confirmed that the Mustang Mach E does indeed need the 50A adaptor. Thanks!
I got the regular 50A, mainly because I'm not planning on using it a whole lot and who knows when Tesla will start updating their chargers to prevent the use of devices like these.

They already have with the v3 destination chargers. But it's up to the station owner if they want to lock out non-Teslas. I wouldn't think that most will.
