Why is the GT limited to only 5 seconds peak power, it's obvious that not all EV's have this limitation, what gives?

Scared of problems arising most likely or people getting in to accidents then blaming ford for it?

Ford barely acknowledges the limitation. They have not said why they did it.

This is my guess...based on nothing but speculation. Then again, this is the internet.

In almost every step of the way, Ford has been SUPER conservative with everything on their first full EV: Buffer on the battery, DCFC curve, etc. My guess is this is yet another step in their paso doble, keeping everything on super nanny mode until they have some data with how all of us eHoonigans will use the car (well...all of you eHoonigans...I don't have/or am getting a GT).

My "hope" is that after more data and "real world testing by our faithful users", they will open it up. It should make all of you GT buyers feel good helping Ford with all of their data gathering. It's like a $60K+ beta program.

I jest. In all actuality, other than a few nits to pick, the cars seem solid, and Ford has done a more than decent job with their first EV. Look at what a problem the EVs from BowTie motors are turning into. Hopefully, it won't be like that with these Mach E's.

They are using 18650 cells. I suspect their water jacket design is vastly superior for thermal dissipation than the Pouch style cells we have. Pouch cells deliver a lot of power VERY fast, but also get much hotter as a result. Our packs are relying on a single aluminum plate between pouches to scrub heat through a thermal interface to the coolant below the pouches. That is not an efficient design to remove heat FAST like you need to do if you go full power for any extended duration.

I really don't think we're going to get much better than we have. I think they're going to have to design the thermal system differently.

Well that depends on which idea you want to take from the 3425 other threads on this...

There's:
  • The car will explode
  • The car will catch fire
  • People will crash
  • People will sue
  • The battery life will drop by 1% each time
  • The car will just fall apart
  • You'll drive into a crowd
  • Something will come shooting out of the motor like a projectile
  • Because of "data"
Or we can say, "No one knows because Ford hasn't told us" ... but what's the fun in that?

ICE vehicles have throttle limiters to protect the engine from throwing a rod and the public who are not drag racing

Huh?

ICE vehicles let you got 100% throttle whenever you want. Not sure what youā€™re talking about.

Do you mean rev limiters? Because that isnā€™t even remotely the same. On an ICE, removing a rev limiter on a stock motor wonā€™t make it faster. Itā€™s usually set well outside the power band.

There is infinitely more danger of an improperly secured wheel/tire flying off and killing someone than there is a connecting rod (or piston) actually punching itā€™s way outside the block then continuing through the bodywork and out into the unsuspecting public. The worst is usually an oil slick from a punctured block/oil pan.

Ford did the 5 second limit because their initial data analysis supported it. And to piss off a fellow called Frankie. Hopefully that changes.

Not true, around 2000 ICE manufacturers began implementing what is called torque management, it will reduce power via throttle position, valve timing, ignition timing etc. Every high performance ICE car has it now.
