Since they divided the miles between the cities by the total elapsed time to get the speed. It would only be a valid estimate if they did not stop. If you went one hundred miles in an hour and a half that would not be too impressive. If, however, in that hour and a half you stopped and had lunch for a half hour than your average speed while traveling was one hundred mph.
