Nothing against the tradespeople in general, but anyone in the trades right now is just throwing numbers out to see what sticks. Easier to land a few whales that overpay for a quick job than try to schedule out lower margin reasonable cost jobs.

I ended up paying $800 for mine because I didn’t want to wait. Guy took half a day and it was legit 20 feet of run. 12 feet straight from panel through a basement drop ceiling, 8 feet straight up garage wall.

Should have been $300 or $400 but I didn’t want to wait 2 months.
Very true - the trades are quite busy right now. I'll also add that some guys will quote an outrageously high price simply because they really don't want to do it. If by chance somebody accepts their high-ball quote, they make a killing.

I spent 1300. Reason is the car was 35 feet away from the outlet. My breaker panel was full so they had to add a new panel and also run conduit to where I want the plug. THey had to put a new 100amp breaker in the old panel and then move the 30amp for the airconditioning and add the 50 amp for the car. Originally he thought he can do it for 850 by splitting one of the breakers but I did not like that idea. I told him to do it by adding a new panel. SO it is what it is, he did a great job everything works great and I love the chargepoint flex.

Wow, these prices! DIY it if you can. It's really not so difficult, if your outlet will be in the same room as the panel. I paid $50 to DIY, though I admit my situation was very lucky. I needed about 6 feet of wire.

And you get a tax credit for a third of that.

I'm pretty jealous. I love DIY projects, particularly the cleanness of electrical - you just have to do the math and cut the power so as not to kill yourself. But I really really don't want to be trying to fish romex through about 20 feet of basement ceiling using nothing but can light holes. The home is newer so it has open trusses as opposed to solid joists, but still. If I could just get the wire across that ceiling to an unfinished utility room abutting the garage, I could easily do the rest of the run with conduit in the garage. If my romex spool I ordered arrives before my electrician is available.... maybe I'll tinker. Maybe. Mainly I'm just getting impatient but I don't even have a car yet.

Totally understandable. Yours sounds a lot more involved. But, it'll give youou something to do while you wait for the car :D

I had a simple hard-wire install just below the breaker panel. About 2' of wire plus the 60amp breaker and 4 new then single breakers to make space. $175. My electrician does all my work as well as house AC maintenance.

I had some crazy pricing here in the Seattle area. 3 quotes with a $600 price range. Ended up going with the lowest bidder at $700. Highest guy was $1,300. CRAZY!

i'm in the eastside, and i finally "settled" on a 600$ quote from the only company that would also do permits... seems like the rest don't care about permits... which sounded fishy... anyway, it's 24/7 electric, they did quick efficient work... but i got the inspector today, who took one look and said - oops, no GFCI breaker... they have to fix it... glad that i went with the company that does permits ;)

I have GFCI breaker too and its code where I live. My question is with several on the forum who are having issues with their 240 volt chargers not working with their SEMA 14-50 outlet could the GFCI be TOO sensitive and keep tripping?

wow... when they switch mine to GFCI, i will know for sure.... mine has no GFCI, and the chargepoint homeflex is working flawlessly... it would be awful if the GFCI messes it up (and apparently it's code for Washington state for NEMA 14-50 outlets) :p

I usually DIY whenever possible but electrical is the one thing I leave to licensed electricians (outside of changing my own outlets, switches, etc). My biggest concern being in the unfortunate event of a house fire, if they trace it back to my DIY solution then insurance won't cover the claim. They likely won't cover if a bad electrician did the job either but at least if they're licensed/bonded/insured you can make the claim against them.

I'm a little jealous myself of all the DIY'ers because I love working with electrical, but even paying a ridiculous price would let me sleep better at night than the anxiety of not being covered.

That's even crazier. All 3 quotes I got included inspection. I went with Custom Electrical out of Auburn. Guy did the install less than an hour and the inspector came the next day, and all was good!

I'm actually down in Des Moines, but it's always easier to put Seattle on these types of places.

My quotes for a 14-50 outlet on 50 amp breker 10 feet from the box were $400 to $900 from licensed electricians. The least expensive is a one person company but highly recommended. The lower end quotes run the pipe thing and outlet on the outside of the wall. The higher end ones cut everything in flush but require drywall repair and painting.

If GFCI is code where you live for a 14-50 and the electrician insists on it I would recommend having the charger hardwired at which point you don’t need a GFCI breaker. All the wall mounted EV chargers have a GFCI built in and this is a recipe for nusciance tripping of the breaker.
