SSM 51589 2021-2023 F-150/Mustang Mach-E/Edge - Android Auto Unable To Wirelessly Connect And/Or Android Phones Rebooting When Connected To The Vehicle Via USB

Some 2021-2023 F-150/Mustang Mach-E/Edge vehicles may exhibit a concern of Android Auto unable to wirelessly connect and/or Android phones rebooting when connected to the vehicle via USB. This is due to a concern with the Google application on the customers device. Google has released a fix for these concerns. For Android phones not connecting wirelessly, request that the customer update their Android Auto version to 6.1 or later. For customers who’s Android phone reboots when connected via USB, request that the customer update their Chrome application to 88.0.4324.181 or later. The customers service provider should be able to assist customers having difficulty updating their device. This is not a warrantable repair.

----End SSM----

These software versions are from February 2021, so if you haven’t updated your phone in two years you probably should…

Thanks for sharing, Mach-Lee. These posts are always helpful.

This particular one is a bit confusing for me.

Every now and again I get an error that I cannot connect to Android Auto wirelessly. It just happened again a couple days ago.

But my AA app says I updated on 4/25 to the latest version, which is 9.3.631434

Not sure how that relates to Ford saying I should update to 6.1 or later.

It means your concern is caused by a different bug than the specific ones mentioned as being resolved. Some Android users have very old phones that aren't being updated anymore, or they've turned off auto-updates and haven't accepted anything recent.

I sometimes experience the same issue you're describing.

I keep experiencing the same wireless not connecting. If I connect the USB cable and the disconnect, the wireless will connect.

The fact they still support Android 6.1 is amazing. It's nearly to v13.

I'm on v12, always up-to-date on the other components, and wireless just drops sometimes. A phone reboot takes care of it.

Whether my Android connects depends on the weather, the moon phase, and if the Rockies won their last game. I never quite know...

I have that issue as well, but only recently. Some software incompatibility has been introduced on the Mach e or my Pixel 6a. My solution is to stop and start bluetooth on the phone. So far that has been working.

I'm on Android Auto 9.5.631814-release and wireless Android Auto doesn't work half the time. This SSM is very out of date.

Same, now. I think it has something to do with the last two OTA update. When I had FOB with me. I would turn on BT on phone and walla always connected to AA. Even after the OTA. I decide to go fully PAAK again (no FOB) and it would connect to phone /pixel 4a only not AA. I would say wirelessely it connects half the time.

I don't know if switching to fully PAAK had something to do with it so I went with FOB again and just turn on BT on my phone for AA. it connected half of times. So leading to the OTAs the cause.

No luck connecting wireless for me. Android Auto version 9.3.631433 with a Samsung A10 cell phone on Android version 11.

My 2023 Select will connect to my phone using Bluetooth. But the phone then generates an Android Auto alert telling me to follow the directions on the car. The car tells me to use a USB cable and plug the phone into the car.

Android Auto works using a USB cable, but I can not get it to connect wirelessly.

I have this issue. So much so that I would say 95% of the time wireless connection does not work. When I do plug the phone into USB it comes on immediately. My solution I got a new phone my old phone was a pixel 7 new phone is a fold 4. The new device has no issues connecting.

My wireless has gotten worse in recent weeks too. Failed to connect maybe 25% of the time on a recent 4000 mile road trip. Finally just started plugging in. Which was kinda needed anyway just to keep the phone charged.
