After just over 20,000 miles I discovered a very useful twin feature on the center screen's map section, especially for longer trips.

Right below the main map (you need to have the map up, and not any other "drawer" choice) there is a white bar across the screen that displays whatever street or highway you are currently on. To its left and to its right, on either end of the bar, there is some other information... maybe the time-to-destination, or altitude in feet, or miles to destination etc.

My big discovery :)rolleyes::D): touch either of the end sections, and a whole list of displayable info categories drops down to choose from via radio buttons. This is true even while moving at speed.

Examples for either end of the street bar are: altitude in feet, time to 1st waypoint, miles to 1st waypoint, time to final destination, miles to final destination, and several others.

This is really useful information on long(er) trips with multiple waypoints. I settled on altitude (left side) and time to final destination (right side) for long trips, and miles to next waypoint (left side) and time to final destination (right side) for local running around.

Enjoy!

Discovering new features is always cool! I've always used Carplay maps, but it sounds like I need to try the built in nav.

Same - I think I have used the built-in Sync4 map a grand total of 30 minutes in the 17,000 miles I've driven (and that was only because my phone was near dead and CarPlay pretty much negates wireless charging).

I like the Ford NAV system, quite a bit better than the one I had on my Prius Plug-in. It does occasionally give errors though. When I come north on I5 into downtown LA it indicates that I go straight and the route shows that I should continue on I5 but the audible directions tell me to keep left to State route 2 (state route 2 is to the right).

Another issue I have is that the NAV keeps routing me to the Fast Track/Express lanes which are toll lanes. Does anyone know how to change settings so it avoids toll roads. I can't find anything in the manual that tells me how to do this.

Yes, that is a slider button setting in the Navigation / settings menu.

I actually prefer the Ford Nav system to CarPlay Apple Maps/Google Maps.
I agree, not sure why but I like it. I typically will also run google maps or Waze from my phone to make sure I am going to arrive as quickly as possible. I might try apple\google maps with 4.1.2 now that its full screen.

Agree.
I came across the feature described by the OP around the same time I believe. 20k miles seems like such a long time ago.... :)

I prefer Waze to all of them.........maps are much better andjust today it alerted me to a speed trap near my home !
Here’s a little “life hack…” leave Waze on in the background and you’ll get all of the rich notifications, such as speed traps, regardless of what primary nav software you’re using.

I was going to do a trip this weekend (decided against it due to the cold here in FL) - but what was interesting is I did the nav last night in the car and compared Apple with Charger to Ford with Charger - and while they showed the same route - Ford showed 30 minutes less - I'm thinking it may have something to the amount of charge it was suggesting - not sure though - I figured I'm going to try the build in first and go from there.

If / when CarPlay can take over the whole system as Apple has been showing I may use the other as I like the Apple Maps UI better

I use the OEM Ford nav exclusively and by now I have multiple long distance trips... in that light, yes the Ford nav tries to calculate "how much - where" to charge on the selected route and therefore modifies distance-between-charges with info on the State of Charge of the main battery, weather and traffic calculations accordingly. The OEM nav system has an advantage because it interacts with the sensors across the whole car as well as calculating the road and road and traffic.

I find it useful yet I don't let it rule my life, if that makes sense... kind of like suggestions from a lawyer are professional advice, not directives.

Once plugged in, I try to charge more than suggested, because... I'm already stopped, and Winter range loss, and lead-footed driver, and gremlins, etc. etc.

In the background photo behind the OP Title, a 3D display is showing on the screen. Is this a depiction of an OEM nav display?

One of my objections to the Ford nav has always been the stick figure graphics compared to the Car Play Navs. Forgive my insecurity😊

In addition, you can click on the center of the bar and get additional information such as nearest intersection and geographic coordinate location.

The built-in nav will switch from stick figure view to 3D view if you are in a highly populated city and traveling at low speeds (I think it kicks in at 35 mph or below, but not certain where the cutoff is). I have seen it in Chicago and Denver downtown areas, but not in further out neighborhoods or rural towns.

The only thing that I dislike about the built-in nav is how it displays street names. I wish they were bigger text, oriented along the path of road, and repeated over a reasonable distance. Google and Apple maps display of street names do this.
