"KIDS, WE ARE LATE," I bellowed, trying to get them out the door for school this morning.

I unplugged the car from preconditioning, and my smallest daughter asked why the MME was charging when it had been plugged in all night. I told her it was preconditioning, and I explained why that was useful, particularly in hotter or colder weather.

She climbed into the car, and my boy got into the car, and we got him strapped into his booster for the trip to school. Note, I didn't mention I closed the charge port door.

I started to back out of the garage IN THE CAR I HAVEN'T HAD EVEN A WEEK YET, and I heard this sickening CRUNCH sound. I looked around in a panic and saw my charge port door looked like a quarterback's knee that had gone the wrong direction after a hit. I pulled back into the garage to see the charge port door cover on the floor.

Already late, I took the kids to school and then came back to assess the damage. Surprisingly, I found that there is only the most imperceptible dent in the fender panel--like you can't see it...you can only sort of feel it--and that the charge port door cover is held onto another panel that actually has the door pin lock. Looking at it, the door cover is connected to the pin lock panel by a series of clips and a sliding ramp. Nothing looked broken, no plastic looked stressed, and I saw where the pins aligned. I put the door about ¼ of the way off the right side, pressed down, and slid the door into place to the left with a CLICK as the ramp in the middle made contact and latched.

Maybe I just got lucky and this is the way they were always constructed, or maybe this is some kind of mitigation they built into the later models (mine was built the last week of June/first week of July), to ease the charge door denting issue where now if it goes too far, it pops off before damaging the fender (much). It's entirely possible I just got lucky as I was CREEPING out of the garage as I do, afraid to hit the sides, but I thought it was still an interesting note to convey about how the charge port door exterior plate attaches should this happen to one of you.

...and yes, I absolutely need to change my method of "unplug, holster charger, close charge port door" to "unplug, close charge port door, and holster charger."

I wish the car knew the door was open and threw up a warning on the dash if you shift out of park with it open.
OH NO, IT DOES.

I've OFTEN seen "Charge Port Door Ajar" but for some reason, either it didn't this time or I just completely missed it and it cleared after a while, or I pressed "OK" to dismiss absentmindedly.

Believe me when I say that this wasn't my finest hour.

EDITED TO ADD: I got back into the car and tried to reproduce the issue several times. Once you turn on the power, if the door is open, it puts up CHARGE PORT DOOR AJAR in a big box on the screen. Did it every time. I'm now 100% sure I must have pushed the OK button to dismiss the annoying pop-up window out of a very bad habit of ignoring dialog boxes.

OH NO! Man, that really sucks. I'm sorry but at this point, it might be a good option to look into putting the kids up for adoption. You don't need that kind of distraction in your life

That's a good point, but I think I'd want to start with the 20 and 18 year olds. They cost me more than the 13, 10, and 7 year olds do at this stage of my life.

That was a close call, maybe it wasn't your finest hour, but still a lucky day.

Does it really make sense to plug in the car to precondition it unless you are planning to use most of the range during the day? (It's a question from someone who doesn't have the car yet and pretty much doesn't go anywhere ;))

Yep, as they get older the need/want less attention but more money. ;)

Much better than the guy who pulled into his garage with his Model X door open. Now that was painful to watch. So painful I had to watch it several times.

Probably not, to be honest. It's pretty temperate right now where I am. IF IT HAS A FEATURE I WANT TO USE IT. Sigh. It's a condition.

@JohnnyForensic I had something similar happen with my passenger side mirror. Crunched the glass panel quite nicely and I was a bit of a wreck until my replacement glass arrived and I swapped it out. Hopefully it's a relatively inexpensive and easy swap!

Oh, there was no actual damage to the panel itself; it just popped off. I was able to slide it back into place once I calmed down and took a breath.

BTW, does it have a feature to charge when battery is below a certain level? For example, I want to charge it when the battery level drops below 30%, but if not, plugging in will be only for preconditioning based on departure schedule (probably when I get the car it will be really cold and no covid and work from home)

I don't think it has that specific option.

I know you can set it to charge to a maximum level that you might set, but I haven't seen a setting telling it to ignore charging UNLESS below a specific level. You can also tell it as a one-off to charge to 100% when you want it to, overriding the maximum level setting that instance.

You can tell it on which days you want preconditioning, when you want it (up to two times per day), and what general temperature zone you want it in, or you can leave this blank.

You can tell it not to charge except for specific windows of time to match your best electricity pricing if your area has different pricing windows (mine doesn't).

I think that's the limit of charging options. I think. If I'm wrong, someone will correct me.
