According to Ford's BEV team on a call just now, an APIM update was delivered to my car last night. As soon as I got in and started driving today, it was obvious something was very wrong, hence my call to Ford. Symptoms are as follows -

1. There is NO regenerative braking in any drive mode. I drive primarily in Unbridle and when I lift off of the accelerator, the car actually seems to speed up or at least continue on its trajectory with no backing off the speed at all. I tried switching drive modes and there was no change in behavior and all three modes felt identical. The only part of the drive mode change that works seems to be the changes to the IPC display.

2. While going about two MPH while coming to a stop, I switched on One Pedal Drive to see if that would bring it to its senses. It did not. Rather it caused the car to come to an immediate and very abrupt stop. The car basically doesn't go anywhere in that mode without great difficulty.

3. The car feels like the rear motor has partially seized up, I can feel a bumping in the drivetrain and I can hear a dull thump the whole time. It's really pronounced in a turn.

4. There is no notice of this update either in SYNC or in my FordPass app. I had no idea the car was updated until I started driving it and talked to Ford.

The car was perfect when I parked it last night, today not so much.

This is a very serious issue, impacting drive-ability and safety. No one wants this update to hit their car, so turn off your auto updates if you don't already have these problems. The car is not safely driveable and is parked until I can get it to the dealer via tow truck.

I'm happy to provide my VIN and/or Ford case # via DM if anyone wants to dig around.

I hope no one else is going through this.

I'm not doubting the symptoms described, nor that there could be a serious issue.
But I'm very sceptical that it would be related to an APIM OTA.

You can reboot your APIM, taking it completely offline, while you are cruising down the interstate or sitting at a traffic stop. Yet the drivetrain module ensemble still do their job.

I don't think I made much of a leap here. The car was perfect yesterday, got an update last night, and now it's quite bad.

What do you think the issue could be?

Tough to diagnose from a single post on the internet. But I, by nature, use process of elimination when I'm diagnosing most issues. Perhaps the help line representative was mistaken, or maybe in fact your car did receive an APIM update, but I just can't see how anything related to an APIM would have that kind of influence on the drivetrain.

Do you have any notification on the Sync screen or FordPass regarding an OTA? Maybe it was an OTA for a different module than the APIM.

Can you please post the exact name of the update or share a screenshot? This sounds like much more than a failed APIM update. APIM is just the touch screen and settings.

UPDATE - I let the car sit for an hour, now is completely back to normal.

This info is from the email I got from the BEV rep -

Thank you for contacting Ford Motor Company and allowing us the opportunity to assist you with your vehicle concern. As mentioned, your vehicle completed a software update on June 6, 2025, at 1:36pm. The Software Update number is SYNC-25.2.1.6.5.

I have no record of any updates in either SYNC or in FordPass.

Did the car throw up any warning messages on the IPC (driver display)? As Lee said, an APIM update shouldn't do anything to the drivetrain performance. However it is possible that in doing the update the 12V battery drained enough that some of the modules went a bit nuts. This shouldn't be happening on the 2024s since there is software to check the status of the 12V battery before doing an update, but for some reason yours might have been an unusual case.

I'm glad to hear that the car is working properly again.

When I drove yesterday I noticed I was having to brake when normally the one pedal would take care of slowing down And stopping. I was in a hurry so I didn’t take the time to further investigate. I will check if the one pedal driving was turned off With update.

I have no idea if our '24 P4X got an update or not (auto updates are turned on), but it drove completely normal this morning, for what it's worth....

It would be nice if somehow Ford could program the car to an alert any time there is an OTA update. I'm no software engineer, but I can't believe it would be that difficult to do?

What the "BEV team" failed to mention is that the OTA that was sent to your vehicle never installed. It was sitting in your queue for two weeks before it timed out and failed because you car never pinged the server back to accept it. That is strange because your car seems to be talking to the cloud just fine. I pulled the codes it reported yesterday and there is nothing out of the norm. Hard to say what caused the issues you're describing, but if it is back to normal, I would not stress it.

Thanks for checking all that out. I’ll pass that info along to the dealer when I take the car in this week. The service manager sent me an email saying he sees a code about an overheat at the coupler. I’ve never used a supercharger except for about three minutes to test out the Lectron adapter but that was months ago. Most recent charging has been with the Ford Mobile Charger on a 50 amp circuit I installed as backup and have charged using that the last couple of times since my access to my ChargePoint Home Flex is blocked by some remodel work.

That's an old stored code and not an active fault, but it would not hurt to have them check it out if they're willing to.

Make sure you are still in Unbridled. Recently, there have been a few times after parking the car, I've gotten in and started driving and noticed no regen as typical and I get the same feeling of coasting when expecting regen braking to slow down. I check which mode I'm in and for some unknown reason, the car has been "reset" to Engage. Not sure why the mode is being switched while the car is off and parked? No software updates are shown, and I don't have the insurance company nanny on board.
