Remitting sales tax collected is different than paying a sales tax on something you sold. That boggles the mind. I would like to see that statute/tax code/etc. that stipulates that.
When I replaced the center speaker, I ran new wire to the back so it gets amplified with the other speakers. I also ran new wire for the Alpine tweeters when I installed them in the dash.
Some people just remove the center speaker entirely. I tried it both ways and I kinda prefer with it in. I replaced it with the Infinity 3.5" speaker. I found someone to go in halves with me so it made it more economical
Maybe just add a powered subwoofer like a Kicker to add some bass to the system. They can be had for $200 on Facebook Markeplace. You can power it by tapping into the 12v plug in the back (maybe just stay with a 10" sub) and the subwoofer signal in the back
