I am using the Ford charger in a 110volt outlet. The car only charges at 1.2 kwH. Should it be faster??

Typical rates for the Mach-E on 110V/120V range from 1 - 1.5 kW / hour, so your right in the range. :cool:

It’s basic math. To find the wattage, use the electric power formula:

P = V x I

P = Power in Watts
V = Voltage
I = current (amps)

P = 120v x 12a (max amperage of the Ford mobile charger on L1)
P = 1440W/1.44kW

There is a 10% loss in heat through the AC to DC inverter. 1440W - 144 =1,296 W. You are most likely lower than 120v, so you’re in the ballpark. You have to increase the amps and/or voltage to get more power (watts).

Great example of why those withoutaccess to level 2 should not buy an EV. Hope your install is soon.

As someone who can’t install a level 2 charger in our current house i gotta say i strongly disagree.

120v charging has never been an issue for me in the past 3 years.

I think a more reasonable statement is to make sure you’re well educated on your charging options and capabilities before buying vs your typical drive distance.

Many people are going to drive less than 50km a day. Especially where I live. and in 12hrs of charging which is reasonable you can easily replace that distance. Not everyone lives in car centric suburban sprawl 🙄

I lived with 120v charging for over a year. We had 2 EVs and 1 charger. While not ideal, it worked. We would plug in and wait about 3 days for it to be back to 80/90%. As long as we kept an eye on each car state of charge and kept them staggered we were fine.

Level 2 is definitely the way to go.

To the OP, it appears you are in the range of normal

I purchased a SPLITVOLT which uses my 220 (dryer plug) in the carport. This gives me a level 2 but slightly less due to a buffer but better than level 1. This avoids spending thousands of dollars to have an electrician install a proper 220. Hope this helps. 🤙🏽

Sure they should. Level 1 works for plenty of people. Topping up at a DC fast charger weekly works for plenty of people. If you want an EV for all of the reasons an EV is awesome, do ten minutes of research and find a way to make it work. Just like people who buy an F-150 find a way to make it to the gas station and pay for all that gas.

While I do have level 2 at work, the spots are often full, and it's not uncommon for me to have to largely rely on my level 1 at home. With the amount I drive, EV still makes 100% sense. And if for some reason I'm desperate, I can go to a Tesla charger to top off every now and then. I have only had to do this once (not counting charging up before a road trip), and it was because I had been counting on charging at work on an off day when I thought spots would be open. When they weren't had to go to supercharger. Had I not planned on using the work one though, I would have been fine had I been charging that week at home overnight.

When I got my Mach-e almost 4 years ago I was thinking of installing a 220V outlet so I could use my charger at L2. I found that with the amount I drive the L1 worked fine so I have never bothered with the install of the 220V outlet. I usually wait until the car is below 70% then charge it back up to 90%. This usually happens about once per week. If I need to take a longer trip I usually charge up to above 80% the day before my trip then charge overnight so I am at 100% by the time I am ready to leave for the trip.
