After 17 months of waiting/agony on 3/31 we welcomed out Rapid Red Metallic Premium AWD Extended into our family. All of us were excited to go pick up the car (and the daughter was quite relieved to get rid of the 19 Fusion Energi). We X-Plan'ed it and things were smooth at the dealer. We went with traditional financing. Between a busy day and COVID protocols it took us a bit of time to get things done but here we are today loving our Mach-E.
I figured I could regurgitate lots of things that have already been said but instead will try to focus on our optic of the car experience we have had so far.
Lets go:
Purchase: Ted Britt Ford Chantilly was great to deal with through the entire reservation and purchase process. We know a few people there which made things a bit easier. Certainly not our first Ford nor our first Ted Britt purchase. X-Plan, out the door, not much agony. Did anyone else catch the old Ford GT or the Backdraft Racing Cobra replicas in the showroom at TB Chantilly?
Overall experience: Since pickup I have spent time purposely learning and experimenting with the various Mach-E settings. 1 week in Engaged, 1 week Unbridled, 1 week Whisper. I think for me its either Engaged or Unbridled for daily driving. While Whisper is relaxed its almost too loose a feel. I've purposely charged using all methods to ensure no issues. 120/240 Ford EVSE, 240 Clipper Creek @ home, Electrify America 150kw, Volta and Sema Connect. The Clipper Creek 16AMP we used with the Fusion Energi will be enough for normal around town that we do but I do want to upgrade to 32Amp just to have some what-if capability at home. I've begun using a USB-C stick for some tunes and it appears a bit smoother than the old USB-2 stick. Wireless charger is working great with the Samsung S20. The wife is a bit BEV beginner so for her this was her first chance to drive one and really see what its like. She enjoys it.... She doesn't want one, but she has a better appreciation of BEV's and is warming up to a road-trip. The daughter despised the Fusion (maybe I threatened to keep it for her to drive when older) so she was happy to get the Mach-E and really enjoys it. Quotes from them below.
From daughter: ...." Smooth riding, good crossover, i like the colors looks like very mustang colors, very modern, love the screen and the radio playback, i wish it had the cooling seats in front"
From wife: ...."Rides smooth as butter"
Likes: Variety of materials and textures in the cabin, exterior is hands down the best IMO, very quiet, I find the overall car to be a great combination of Mustang-esque looks with a techno-modern feel
Dislikes: no cooled front row, with the radio on & windows up = great sound, with the radio on windows down = not only loss of volume but sounds as well (does speed compensated volume do anything at all?), all the Tesla stans that constantly show ignorance about anything not tesla (especially non-tesla charging - I am totally tired of hearing about only home charging for non-Tesla vehicles by them)
Problems/Oddities: Tire pressure at delivery was 49psi (easy fix)
WiFi did not connect using WPA-2, but stayed connected after connecting to WPA first (easy fix but why not WPA2 connection out of the box?)
Temp display several minutes (about 5) behind after start up
VR sometimes does not recognize accepted words (weather, phone calls etc)
Speed compensated volume (all settings appear same/zero impact)
Randomly the touch screen is slow to start
With Navigation on screen I use VR to call, talk and hangup, the screen stays at phone display not where I started from (Sync 3 did this too)
Fordpass limited at best (charge times math, map unresponsive, notifications hit-n-miss)
Vertical lines take over touchscreen display every so often and reboot is required
Bluetooth drops randomly - post phone call, just driving along
Text Message notification icon always there, not smart enough to only display at new messages (sync 3 was smart enough...)
Phone volume at same volume number seems lower than any other audio output (radio, nav, usb etc)
Hopes: OTAs continuously improve things, nice logo floormats available at some point?, OEM wheels offering?, is a Ford Performance tune too much to ask?? It is a mustang.... Ford OEM aftermarket is pretty sweet for other models.
Public sightings while out: 1) Had somebody pull up behind us and ask if it was the new Bronco....WTH, 2) A cute lady noted to me "nice truck" in a parking lot and 3) I was followed a bit by a lady in a Land Rover who asked me "What kind of car is that? I saw the mustang badges but its not a mustang." We talked for a bit about the car and she took some pictures and we went our separate ways.
Conclusion as of 1+ month or so: I would say Ford has a solid entry into the EV market with the Mach-E. Some would say "it's not a Tesla" but yes, its NOT a Tesla. Thats exactly the point and why we have it!! Nothing against those that prefer Tesla its just that we don't. Like most there are some noticeable quirks in the s/w but nothing that makes it a fail for me. I hope Ford really embraces the OTAs and fixes/improves things. Its been 4 months of customer deliveries...when is the first substantial OTA???
