Android Auto shows to be connected, but not functional

My phone is paired to the car with BT, and I have it physically plugged in, but I cannot do anything with cars screen to make a call, set directions on the map, etc. Voice commands using steering wheel stop functioning too.
I have tried setting map directions then plugging in, but then map app on phone closes and nothing opens on car.... To me this seems jacked up. Is there a fix?
