I've spent a few days with emails to Ford Technical and Vodafone here in the UK as I couldn't get the Hotspot MME to connect. Finally solved as a result of another comment on this forum. So if it helps please note.
If using your phone with wireless Android Auto you cannot connect to Hotspot MME on the same handset. The only way is to connect the handset via cable and then you can connect wirelessly to Hotspot and sign in/activate to your account.
It won't be a problem for other users in the car but when setting the Hotspot up either use another handset or connect via cable.
Hope that helps others.

Interesting, does Android not tell you that??? iOS will given you an error saying WiFi is in use by carplay and that you must disconnect it before joining another WiFi network.
