Because a wagon used to be based on a sedan (add a back to it).

And an SUV used to be based on a truck (add a back to it).

The waters have been muddied with crossovers.
As I've noted before, my insurance company (Farmer's) says my Mach E is a Truck. Not a small truck, not a SUV/Crossover, a Truck...

Damn thing doesn't have a bed! I suppose they base it on the Chassis.

It’s possible they only have 2 classes- car and truck?

You should take it to an off-road truck rally. Make sure to bring in your insurance declarations page to show the locals!

It also might be based on weight? It's as heavy as a truck?

Update: I’ve given up on getting a car before my order comes in. I could maybe get an identical ā€˜21, but the logistics for taking delivery were getting complicated with our holiday plans. I couldn’t find a GT PE without hefty markups and I’m not willing to give my tax credit to the dealer. I’m getting ready to go south for the winter and my husband really doesn’t want to road-trip with an EV as he’s a road warrior. He would never like EVs if he had to deal with the learning curve for charging and more than a 15 minute pit stop. Better to wait and figure it out on my own next summer before we road trip in it.
