Took a trip to Milwaukee this weekend. Stopped at a Tesla Super Charger at a Woodman's Grocery Store in Madison. Awesome setup with cables long enough to reach the Mach e without taking up two spaces. Pulled up, plugged in with my adapter and charged with no issues, very quickly. Stopped at the same location in the error and the charge bombed with "Sorry, something went wrong connecting to the charging station". I tried a couple of stations and both my A2Z and Ford adapters, no luck. I downloaded the Tesla app, created an account, added a valid payment method and tried again. No luck. I gave up and went to an Electrify America and changed there.

This morning, I drove to a Tesla Super Charger near my home to try it again. Same thing, wouldn't charge, but this time FordPass said something about payment method on the Blue Oval Network. Our credit card had recently been replaced by our bank so I figured that was the issue. I attempted to update the payment method and got an "Oops, something went wrong message" in FordPass. I called support and they had me force close the app and then try to update the payment method. That worked and I was able to successfully charge.

It's frustrating that the Tesla app wouldn't work, with a valid payment method, with the issue in Blue Oval. Apparently the two systems communicate on the back end.

To use the Tesla app, you must activate the charger from the Tesla app, and then plug in. The problem you had was that you plugged in, the BlueOval charge failed due to the credit card, and you didn't unplug and start over.

You can sign up for Tesla membership pricing to save some money if you plan to charge multiple times / 130+ kWh by using the Tesla app and signing up for their plan.

After that you will use the Tesla app to start / stop your session before you plugin to charge.

Nope, they don’t. It’s a race to whoever authenticates first. If you plug in first, then Ford Plug & Charge will take the session and fail because of the expired credit card. If you start the charge with the Tesla app before plugging in, then Tesla grabs the session first (was your card also expired in the Tesla app?). I’ve only had the Tesla app not work a couple times due to poor cell signal or a brief server glitch.

Ford Plug & Charge is completely walled off from Tesla, Tesla has no idea what your name or credit card info is when using P&C. Ford handles the transaction themselves.

That’s interesting. When Ford wouldn’t work I downloaded the Tesla app and set it up new with the new credit card and it still wouldn’t charge.

Did you activate it from the Tesla app before you plugged in?

Nope. Unplugged and put the charger back in the base every time. With the newly set up Tesla account, I started the charge and selected the pedestal before connecting to the car.

For what it is worth I bought an early A2Z and it worked fine, even plugged and charged thru Ford when tested. Some time later (months) my Ford adapter arrived. I took it to the Tesla station to give it a go. No luck plug and charge but it does start and charge using the Ford and Tesla App. I then tried the A2Z and it does not work at all. It is one of the recalled units and I have no Idea that has anything to do with it. Since I have the Ford adapter I just stuck it in the Frunk and have not fiddled with it since.
