Heads up for the Google Pixel Android Auto fans! With the December Android update, we now have the ability to enable an 80% charge limit, which also does battery bypass. This means the phone bypasses charging the battery when topped up to 80%, and runs directly from the current supplied to the phone. In my limited tinkering, there are some serious benefits to keeping phone temps low when running Android Auto and monitoring battery current and battery temps with the AccuBattery app on a Pixel 6 Pro. (This was an option on Samsung, Sony, and Asus phones, but I didn't have any of these to test on.)

Previously, using Android Auto would cause the phone and the battery to heat up significantly. Battery temperatures were greater than 40C with the phone continuously charging when using Android Auto and I was worried about battery swelling. I tried to curve the demand on the phone by disabling Google Maps so it couldn't auto start.

After the December update with the battery topped up to 80%, when using Android Auto with both Google Maps and Spotify, the phone battery temp hovers around 30C with a 0W/0mA current.

If you had any temp problems before, it's worth giving this a shot with the 80% charge optimization enabled, I believe the battery bypass feature is responsible for the temperature drop. I plan to test more since there were a lot of variables (Qi vs. USB, Summer vs. Winter ambient temps)

Are the overheating issues specifically when charging on the wireless pad?

This is why I am holding out on upgrading from my Pixel 4a for as long as possible. I haven't had any issues with battery overheating during use. Unfortunately my battery can barely hold a charge now, so I am forced to upgrade to another phone soon..

The wireless charging still heats the phone up to 40C. :(

I need to record temps using AA over USB with and without bypass enabled. Right now, it runs cool, whether its USB, battery bypass, or the combination of both.
