My wife took out our 2024 Maki rally to drive to a friends house about 20 miles away. She came back to get a sewing machine and told me that the range had dropped down to 80 miles and she is having trouble getting blue cruise to give her hands-free driving that it was only working intermittently. I’ve got more information below, but I’m hoping some more experience people can give me some insight and if we have any problems..

So the car was charged at about 80% and it’s 10° outside when she got home the battery is down to 50% for about a 40 mile trip we did not charge it to 90% like we usually do the night before cause we didn’t plug it in. She didn’t get any warning lights or other indicators that there were any problems.

She reported it while she was driving and had blue cruise engaged then it wouldn’t give her the hands-free options like she thought and she is mostly on interstate 29 traveling north so it should’ve been available her whole time on the interstate.

We took a winter trip two years ago to see my sister in Minneapolis and it was pretty cold, but we don’t remember the battery dropping so fast, but that could be misremembering.

Sorry for the long thread, but does anybody have any ideas or insights or similar experiences I could share?

Thanks in advance for any help!!!!

Here in Oregon we're having a warm winter. I've had my Rally for about 10 months now, and have only driven 3100 miles, so I don't have a lot of data on it yet.

I'm seeing about a 20% drop in range vs summer. I charge inside my garage, which stays about 60F. Outside temps are averaging about 40F (low 35, high 45 ish).

I look at the kWh/Mile report from the My Trip app. With cabin heat on, set to 70F, it's down around 2.2 kWh/M, but with cabin temp set to 64F and seat heat on it's closer to 2.8 kWh/M.

My tire pressure dropped to 36psi in the cold and I've pumped them back up to 38. Don't know how much it helps w/range, but it does help to keep them inflated properly.

I know your Nebraska temps are much colder than here now, so I'm not surprised that your range cut is more drastic. It doesn't sound to me that something is wrong with your car.

Regarding Blue Cruise - I don't have it on the roads that I drive, so I can't report any experience with it.

Keep the top middle of the windshield clean. If the camera gets blocked, bluecruise won't activate.

Also, if the car loses cellular connectivity, you will only get lane keeping. The car needs to verify it is on a mapped highway.

Thanks a ton for your reply and all the information. I really appreciate it. I’ll go check the trip data that on my Ralky. I’ll have to figure out how to do it but I’ll go check it. Our tires are at 36 so I just looked, I know they tend to get lower in the cold. I can take them out and air them up. the garage will recharge the rally about 45° when it’s cold outside.

Overall, we love our Maki. This is our second win with it. We took a long trip to Minnesota last year over Christmas and I don’t remember having the range issues but we didn’t track data like we should’ve.

thanks for all the information.

A couple other items:
Your car wasn't plugged in overnight. Even if our car battery doesn't need more charge, I plug in during winter because battery maintenance system will keep the battery above 32 degrees F. This could help.
Second, although you may not know exactly when the car will be used, setting a departure time will prep the battery and interior - or battery only, if you select that option. Many owners have found the battery prep lasts quite a while, i.e. an hour or more depending on ambient conditions. This should also help. I've found preconditioning needs between 30-45 minutes during 10 degree temps.

This said, the Guess-o-Meter (GOM) can be off quite a bit, as OWG stated above.
Hope this helps.

Occasionally it will have some glitch that makes it not work the rest of the drive. The solution is to pull over, shut off the car, open the door, and wait 5-10 minutes for the car to shut down. Then start it up again and it should work normally. There's no real pattern to it. It basically just needs a reboot when that happens.

Has nothing to do with the cold. I've used it plenty of time when below zero.
