Red bars above "AUTO"

The are three red bars above the "AUTO" in the A/C section. They advance each time to push AUTO. What do they indicate?

Basically there are 3 levels of intensity to the fan, while still keeping it in Auto. So you know how sometimes you get in the car and it blasts the fan at you and maybe you don’t want it that high, but you don't want to entirely take it out of auto. This will just pull it back a bit.
