Of course you are sceptical. And you are no doubt not going to be alone in that scepticism.

But I can't help but think that, at this point, no matter what Ford states publicly, lots of folks have already made up their minds that Ford isn't committed to EV's. And no amount of Billion$ spent, and billion$ still being spent, seems to alter that opinion.

I'm not saying that my next EV will for sure be a Ford offering, but I am pretty convinced that there will be Ford products to choose from. Obviously I chose one of their offerings when I last made a purchasing decision, and there was a lot of competition in the market at the time. Zero regrets with that decision, by the way. The 2023.5 GTPE turns 2 years old in a few days and I still look forward to driving it every day! Perhaps the longest honeymoon period for a 4-wheel vehicle in my near 70 years. I have driven Ford trucks all my life, but it's only my second "car" by them.

I'm getting pretty old and I might not last long enough to choose another brand new vehicle purchase. But as a driver enthusiasts, I'm looking forward to seeing what the Blue Oval actually brings to the US showroom.

For me, they have 2 more years to come up with a BEV that meets my needs and is better appointed than the mme is currently. A midsized truck from Ford is not that vehicle. Nor is the current, decontented, version of the mme. After that, I move on and won’t look back. Will they care? Not in the slightest. Will I care that they don’t care? Not for a moment.

UEV is a nice concept. Mid sized truck for their first vehicle based on it? A big miss. Focus on affordable? Another big miss.

If that skateboard is “real”, it looks like Ford has totally thrown in the towel on a frunk 😢

I am curious about the ability to power a house. I would love to be able to use the battery of my vehicle during the high-cost TOU period.

My key takeaways. 400V Prismatic LFP battery. 48V instead of 12V. Powered NACS port.

And, based on the production line interior image, a dash and instrument cluster from the early 2000s, including a tiny Sync screen 😢

I hear you. And that's more than fair. I think I agree with you that Ford doesn't appear to be focusing on the kind of EV that a current Mach-E owner looking for an even nicer "next Gen Mach-E" would choose.

And for me personally, their first offering from the new platform isn't going to be something that I would likely purchase either. I AM a truck guy, but I tow primarily. I'm not only an RV-full timer, but I travel on weekends towing one of several RV's, depending on the travel mission. So my current F150 Powerboost would only be replaceable with another "electrified" truck with at least similar or better towing prowess.

But maybe that new platform will support a fun-to-drive daily that can generate the grins that my other grin machines provide? (I have had a couple of Miatas and still have a sweet Porsche 987 nested in the barn.

Hoping for a playful crossover or hatch with decent handling and offered in an upscale trim level.

Per AI search at this time only Ford will be offering an American Lidar equipped vehicle. I hope that is wrong. While I really don't want a truck for my next car, Ford really knows how to make trucks well liked. My kid bought a Maverick - loves it (and he is not a truck guy). Lidar offers the possibility to see stopped object much better and cameras and radar. Between the 3 kinds of detectors forward collisions with all objects should be significantly better than whatever is best now.

If your base case is to assume an AI search is wrong when it comes to details…… you are most likely correct!

AI searches do a terrible job telling you about the past correctly, why would it be any better predicting the future? 😂

I’m kinda disappointed with the announcement today. Was hoping he they’d at least show off a full prototype, timeline, proposed performance and pricing details…..

Ford is providing this as an interim update on progress towards the release of the UEV pickup truck in 2027. The goal is to get the cost down to $30,000 so the EV is more affordable and profitable. This is Ford's Model 3 for the masses.

I know most of you here are not truck people, but this same platform will be used for other EVs, likely a SUV, possibly to replace the Mach-E, in the years after 2027.

Key points:
  • They are making the UEV as efficient as possible to shrink the battery.
  • Battery chemistry will be LFP, and they will use AI to adjust charging curve of the battery for optimized DC charging speeds and longevity.
  • 300 mile range seems like the target, and I think they will achieve that.
  • They have Formula 1 aerodynamicists optimizing every millimeter of the body shape for more range
  • 48V electrical system, a first for Ford (and likely the first domestic automaker outside of Tesla)
  • Bidirectional charging built in (it will be able to output AC power)
  • Much more simplified module architecture (5 instead of 30+), which means OTAs should go more smoothly
  • Unicasting for the front and rear body structures, structural battery pack (very similar to Model Y)
Again, $30,000 for a 300 mile range EV seems like a great deal, but inflation is always a pressure, we'll see what happens. Ford underestimated the popularity of the cheaper Maverick when it first came out, so this might be of similar magnitude on the EV side of things.

Jim, that screenshot is actually a previous generation ICE Mustang (stock photo), the interior of the new UEV truck has not been revealed yet.

It appears so. Sacrificed for a bounty? 🤷

Good eye.

They’re doing a very good job of making the Silverado EV, even without CarPlay, look more viable.

I think we’re likely a year away from seeing a prototype and 18 months or more from seeing it on the Ford website. 2027 is not going to be its model year I’d wager.

Then they should not have used that picture.

We can hope.

The problem is that most trucks are used for “truck stuff.” And if it can’t do that well….. it’s dead in arrival.

The Maverick did enjoy a unique space of “cheap and efficient truck.” I’m just not sure that enough of the Maverick shoppers will want a BEV instead.

We shall see as it has zero competition.
