Quick recap of my summer vacation trip in my RWD, standard battery 2021 Premium Mach E. Miles now on car: 26k with 18 payments left
Trip details- MD, PA, OH, MI (UP), Canada, MI (UP), WI, MN, IA, IL, IN, OH, PA, WV, MD
Goal was to reach Iowa as that was the last of 50 states for me to visit.
Trip highlights include stops at Cedar Point (OH), Mackinaw Bridge, lunch in Canada, 4 of 5 Great Lakes, Wrigley Field and NASCAR's Chicago Street Race. Tent camped four nights- Sandusky, OH, Mackinaw Island, MI, Great River Bluffs, MN, and Sabula Lake, IA (Mississippi River)
The car was EXCELLENT! She was a total beast. I am the original owner and I love her more each day. I drive all sorts of vehicles from my 2014 F250 (gas), my 2014 Fusion Energi and my circle track dirt car with a 408 cui Windsor- and the Mach E is just awesome!
Charging- only one hiccup in Escanaba, MI. The EA chargers were down and being worked on. I always have plan A and plan B on my road trips and this trip I had plan C. I brought a Champion 7250 watt inverter generator ($1245 Home Depot) with me. At Escanaba, I had 15 miles left and the next charger was 30 miles away. I had thought I would use the generator a lot more on this trip, but this was the only time I pulled it out. Being 150 lbs and awkward, I used ATV ramps to roll it in and out of the Mach e. I traveled with the tank empty and the gas can in the frunk empty until I needed to gas up the generator. Took about a 30 minute charge to add 15 miles to the car at 24 amps/ 240v. My initial plan was to drive to Duluth, MN, but I never realized how far the entire UP is. From Escanaba, I still had over 5 hours to drive and threw in the towel and drove south to Green Bay instead and grabbed a hotel. I still made it to MN the next day, but the south east corner vice the north east corner and this set me up for my destination of Iowa on Friday and Chicago for the weekend.
Attached are some cool photos of the trip, most importantly the Trip log shot. I was carrying about 600 lbs extra with me.
I believe I learned two things on how to extend the range on this trip- obviously put her in whisper and turn off one pedal drive when driving down mountains like in Pittsburgh. I believe this let's her "coast" when you get off the throttle pedal- I was getting upwards of 6 miles/ kw doing that.
