I didn’t want to plan the entire trip around charging stops. We’re actually pretty lucky in BC to have a lot of EV infrastructure, so I wanted to treat it more like a normal road trip and charge when it was convenient.
I started the trip in the Fraser Valley at 86%.
Our first stop was Manning Park Resort, where we arrived with 36% remaining. We charged back up to 90% while we took a bathroom break and let my kid enjoy the wildlife (the marmots were a hit).
From there we continued on to Penticton to visit a friend. We actually had enough range to make it all the way to Vernon, but after my friend took the car for a rip (because obviously he had to
), I decided to add a little buffer. I found a cheaper FLO charger and added about 10 kWh.
In Vernon, our hotel was close to a BC Hydro station, so I was able to Level 2 charge while we stayed there.
The interesting part was the trip home. I could have made it from Vernon to the Fraser Valley in one shot if I had started at 100%, taking the Okanagan Connector and Coquihalla. But with a kid, I knew we were going to stop anyway, so I wasn’t trying to stretch it.
I stopped at Britton Creek and topped up. Fun fact: BC Hydro has 50 kW, 350 kW, and 400 kW chargers at that rest stop. They’re definitely future-proofing these routes.
I don’t have charging available at home, so I actually use BC Hydro public charging in my neighborhood. After arriving home, I charged back up to 86%.
As for driving style… I definitely wasn’t trying to maximize efficiency. I know speed hurts EV efficiency, but there are a lot of 120 km/h sections on these routes and traffic was flowing around 130 km/h. The A/C was running the entire trip, and for those familiar with the route, the highest elevation I reached was roughly 5,400 ft above my starting elevation.
BlueCruise was also fantastic when it was available. I was able to use it almost continuously from near Kelowna all the way home, and it made the highway portions of the trip incredibly relaxing. I did note that blue cruise didn't seem to want to be active over 130kmph.
Trip totals:
Distance: 872 km (542 miles)
Trip computer efficiency: 21 kWh/100 km (2.96 mi/kWh)
Energy from BC Hydro charging data: 206 kWh
Real-world efficiency including charging energy: ~23.7 kWh/100 km (~2.6 mi/kWh)
Total Cost: $74.13 ($52.59 USD)

but honestly, other than Tesla, they’re the best charging network where I live. The fact that I can road trip through BC without obsessively planning every stop is pretty awesome.
