This video features an interview with Dave, who has surpassed 350,000 miles on his 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E (1:18). The conversation focuses on his experiences with long-term electric vehicle (EV) reliability and debunking common myths surrounding EVs.

Key Takeaways:
  • Exceptional Reliability: Despite having over 358,000 miles on the odometer (2:11), the car has remained largely problem-free with no major mechanical issues (2:20).
  • Minimal Maintenance:Dave has spent very little on maintenance. Key expenditures include:
    • Brakes: He only replaced the front brake pads and rotors for the first time at 340,000 miles (5:06).
    • Suspension: He opted to replace the rear shocks at 340,000 miles (10:27).
    • Tires: He is currently on his seventh set of tires (24:02).
  • Battery Health: The original battery remains in the vehicle, showing only 8% degradation (6:34). Even with frequent fast charging—an often-cited concern among skeptics—the vehicle still provides between 286 and 290 miles of range on a full charge, compared to the original 306 miles (6:40, 17:40).
  • Charging Habits: Dave averages over 400 miles of driving per day for his private transportation business, requiring daily reliance on fast charging, yet the battery performance has remained robust (2:14, 18:33).
Future Goals:
Dave aims to reach a milestone of 476,000 miles, which he equates to the round-trip distance between the Earth and the Moon (13:59). He continues to use his Mach-E as an ambassador for EV technology, frequently discussing the benefits of electric ownership with his passengers (7:42, 38:00).

Pretty impressive. A range loss of around 5% is less than those of us in cold Winter climates face every Winter.

His experience is the same or slightly better than documented Tesla battery longevity data.

One thing that no one mentions is that an EV at 350k drives virtually the same as a new one. An ice with 350k will feel like your thoroughbred triple crown winner of a vehicle turned into a donkey.

Note: now watch some guy come out of the woodwork citing one experience where his grandpa’s Model-T stayed in a pristine shape for 100 years. Keep the faith. It never fails.

Funny how Josh thinks there's no regen in 2 pedal mode. There's no way brakes will last without regen braking for 300,000 miles.

Dave said he paid $1300 for front pads and rotors at the dealer. That seems expensive. And $1300 for rear shocks. He should have gotten the Rally springs for a better ride.

Shouldn't he have changed the front & rear gear fluid, brake fluid, and coolant by now?

In the video he mentions "coolant flush" at 140K. Also "external filter" change which must have involved gear box oil change. No mention of brake fluid service.

Interestingly, my current battery degradation on my 2022 is also around 8% with only ~47k miles, so this shows how battery degradation is primarily related to calendar aging rather than mileage on full BEVs.

It's more about the age than the miles.

Might be even better than new due to updates.

To be fair, I have run a number of ICE over 200K without significant issue, but the effort to do that was not zero.
And the award goes to … my man Clark from Ann Arbor. Given the fact that you’re from A^2 I can’t get mad at you.

But seriously though, there’s a world of difference between ā€œwithout significant issuesā€ and ā€œdrives like newā€. I recall when I was a student at UM, I drove nonstop from NYC to Ann Arbor. My 4 year old Jeep Grand Cherokee at the time had 90k miles on it. I turned the ignition off, but the engine refused to turn off. The cylinders kept wanting to move till they were completely starved from oxygen. I don’t think the Mach-E with 350k miles would feel this rough.

Since then, I never bought a used car or drove a car more than 45k miles. But I understand the benefit of extracting full value from vehicles you own. It makes all the sense in the world, especially if you have the technical know how to maintain them well.

@GreaseMonkey You are absolutely correct. None of the high mileage cars drove like new.

And, thinking back, 2 of the last three to go over 200K had issues with the engine that would need to be addressed soon. (In each case, I had had them for over 8 years and decided to get a newer car before "soon" became "now".)

What I wonder is, what do Dave’s passengers think of the ride quality from the rear seat perspective? I am familiar with his area and have an impression the roads are generally in pretty good shape.

That's nothing. My grandpa’s Model-T stayed in a pristine shape for 100 years. 😁
That might be our grandkids! I got this OLD 2021 Mach-e from my grandpa, I swapped the battery for a small canister of spent uranium, did a motor upgrade and now it can run 1 million miles without charging and puts out 1000 hp.
