:) as the title says. Curious if this is possible.

(about to purchase a watch and this would put the apple watch in the lead as I would love to go places without a phone)

I know the app exists on the watch but wasn’t sure if that meant I could use it as a key or just a few basic functions.

thank you!!

Nope, Ford isn’t that fancy yet.

No way the watch has the battery life for that. A data connection to the cloud is also required. Maybe in 5-10 years.

Don't those toys need a phone to have a signal strong enough to reach to a cell tower?

It's pretty much just a remote terminal (dumb terminal *) for the phone, right?

I'm dating myself. Do these still exist?

Some have discussed how they leave/lock their phones in the car, say to go for a trail run, and use the door pillar code to get back in.

Nah, the car just needs to support NFC or UWB, Hyundai is supposed to be supporting this soon

You can load FordPass on your watch and unlock with it. You can remote start with it. But you can’t actually drive away with just your watch.

In theory ford might be able to make it happen, but that would assume that apple has opened up the Apple Watch Bluetooth api enough that the FordPass watch app could use it. You would also need to have the cell service enabled on your Apple Watch.

That isn’t the right path though. Apple has built in car key support into iPhone and Apple Watch, but the Mach E doesn’t have the necessary tech. Currently just BMWs and soon Hyundais have the Ultra Wideband hardware needed.

It’s possible, the FordPass app actually uses a surprising small amount of battery on my iPhone.

No since the series 2 or 3 Apple Watch they have offered LTE connectivity and they are designed to operate independently of the phone. Particularly when going for a walk or a hike when you are out of range of your phone. Calls, texts, and data transfers to the Watch automatically. It can even support independent Bluetooth connections to headphones. So the car isn’t out of the range of possibility.

Hypothetically because I don’t have a car to test this on yet, could you use the watch to unlock and then use your code to start it as if your PaaK didn’t work?

You should look into modern technology. Cellular apple watches have all day battery.
Yes I know about LTE watches. PAAK requires constant bluetooth scanning that would use more battery than the watches have now. I'm saying you'd need a watch with LTE and a bigger battery to make it possible and have the watch battery last all day.

You don’t even need a watch for that. You can enter your code on the door pillar to get in and use your start code to drive away.
